Default Another engine conversion! **Updated w/pics!**

Okay, I know someone has these answers! I am in middle of swaping a 968 engine into an 89.
On the firewall with the 14 pin flat connector, there is a pigtail with two wires. What is that for?

On the dme end, there is another 12 or 14 pin flat connector. What is that one for?

I think I know what to do about the vacuum, I think I can model most of it off my s2.

But the fuel lines! What did you guys do for the return? Looks like I can use the stock high pressure line, but the return doesn't look like it will work at all.

Last but not least, it looks like I am going to have issues with hood clearance on the front of the engine. Is that an illusion, or is there something I am going to have to do to fix it?

Thx!

T

Try some of the custom braided fuel lines a few have made/bought. Do a search on them for reccomendations.

Clearance shouldn't be an issue. It is the basic engine out of a 944S2 afterall. Maybe the 968 had different engine mounts (but I doubt it)

Good luck, take lots of pictures and document your trials and tribulations. I'm thinking of going this route myself, although to an early '85.

This site might be of some help > http://www.944s3.com/944S3/

Follow this thread: https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-944-951-968-forum/97804-s2-and-968-engine-swap-wiring-notes.html Todd Holyoak posted the wiring notes awhile back. Good luck!

Oh, yes. I have been looking at both the sites and the links quite a bit! Lots of good info in both areas. The mechanical portion has been incredibly easy. Heck, I even dropped the engine in from the top!

Joe, did you have any hood clearance issues? Did you have to take the coverplate off the top of the engine?

And the worst part of this whole thing is, is that I have the old 2.7 sitting there with a good head, and a complete turbo engine will all the exhaust and such. Very tempting to do the turbo conversion also, but I think I might just wait to tackle that one!

No clearance issues -- unless you want strut braces somewhere down the line. You will need to figure something out for the airfilter, though (go either cone or S2 airbox).

the two wires, one red, one blue, should go to the starter harness and alternator harness.

As requested, here are a few pics, I wish I could have gotten more, but I was doing this by myself, and I didn't have any camera monkeys!

Here is what I started with

Here is what I had...

This is the owner describing what he wanted done.

What it looks like in the bay

And does anyone know where this goes? It is by the firewall near the booster.

And the best thing about my car....

Congrats on your engine swap. Did you get it started yet? Let me know if you have any questions. If you are doing this into an 89 my site should come in handy. The wiring specifically, as mine was an 89. I wouldn't put too much stock on that Todd chart as that wasn't for an 89.

I plan to fire this weekend with any luck.
Matt,
What year was your engine out of? What is the two wire plug by the booster connected to(see pic)? Or is it just hanging?
Your site was one of the resources I used to get this far.. Do you have any more info on your wiring changes? According to Todd's chart, I have to swap two pins in the flat connector on the firewall and connect four or so wires to the flat connector by the dme. What did you have to do different?

I believe I had that same wire just hanging. I'm pretty sure you don't need to worry about it.

I can't speak for Todd's chart, as good as it is, it's not for an 89, it's for an 86. The only thing I can say is what's on my website: "DME pin 18 needs continous 12v power, while pin 27 needs "key on" 12v power."

How you get there is up to you. I didn't actually do the wiring change, Zotz Garage did. Regarding the flat connector by the DME, I believe that's for the speedo and the tach, and you can just splice those wires over I think. I'll have to check. My apologies but I did all this almost a year ago, so it's a little fuzzy.

It started this weekend! Now I just need to tidy up a bit, and wait for the throttle cable for it... But once that is in, it will be time to frag the transmission!

If anyone is thinking about the swap, go for it! It is easy, and if you are ready for it, it would really only take a weekend. I think I have about 20 hours or so into the swap, but I had some extra assembly since the car I started on wasn't entirely complete.

Ahh, to hear a 968 engine in a 944 is a thing of beauty!
