Exactly. I think people seem to forget this. Look at other car maker's vehicles from the 1980s. Not much is still around, and what is, is crap. I think the 944 has stood the test of time pretty well.

Also, Rock, about your car leaking, Porsche's leak. My 911 leaks more than my 951 does......

Ted, you don't think (in general) that an 85 Carrera is a more solid car then an 85 944?

^^Oh, there is no doubt to the fact that the 911's are built better than the 944's. I was just saying that in regards to leaking, every Porsche I have had (all 4), has leaked. I wanted to let Rock know that it's not just the 944's.

Also, because the 911s are worth more money, they attract a different crowd that seems to take better care of them.

Owning an NA has been no problem at all so far. Needed maintenance and repairs were never a surprise and failing parts always gave me a good lead time (clutch, brakes, etc). It has been quite a dependable car in all respects. The Turbo has also been fairly trouble-free(starter, sunroof). The trouble shooting on an NA is incredibly basic compared to all of the additional components that can cause the 951 to give me problems. It's just a matter of time and all will be well again. I do love both cars but the 951 is certainly the crankier of the pair. At least both cars are fairly easy to access most common components.

Just replacing a single injector on this car takes me 10 hours so I can't complain too much about the 951 in comparison.

Fun thread.

Hey Rock, I think if you can leave this car alone for a few days, you may feel better.

My own observations are twofold:

One, to echo what some already have said: These are old cars, many have been poorly cared for...However, there are still a disproportunately high number of them around. They are fundamentally solid cars. I am re-building my '87S, not because it needs to be, but just because I want to. The engine is in fantastic shape. The machine shop that I took all the parts to for precise measuring, magnafluxing etc. has shown me all the results and frankly, it's amazing. The engine (147K) is hardly worn at all (except for the valve guides). The mechanic told me that the PO had definitely been good about oil changes (this is a specialist Porsche shop BTW) and that is in fact the truth. It really is mostly about how the car has been taken care of.

I always enjoy looking over cars of a similar vintage (mid eighties) of any make.... many of those that are still around are in rough shape. Now they may not be as expensive to fix, or as sensitive to mis-adjustment as a Porsche, but that is to be expected, isn't it?

Anyway, relax and forget about the car for a few days, it will recharge your batteries.

Well ive calmed down a bit.

The yellow is a great car, on the outside its damn near perfect. People tell me all the time how the confuse it with ferraris and tell me how awesome it is.

Since ive got it ive been trying to put interior in it, first a rust hole stopped me, then i had to find interior to put in it, after the black car crashed I got all the parts i needed. I never expected it to me perfect, a little carpet would have been nice. Its not Carls fault at all, the car was poorly maintained by the PO and im picking up the slack. I bought nice door panels, a nice carpet set, and put them on, THEN after I thought it had been sealed up completely, i take it to the carwash. Now its leaked inside before, but now there are seals on it. Well I take it to the car wash, sure enough it hasnt changed a bit. Water is leaking in from the top, the hatch, made a nice puddle in the rear seats, and damn near ruined my new door panels. Water was leaking out of my speakers it was a mess.

All i want is for the damn car to stay dry on the inside. Other than that, this car has given me minimum bitching. I know theyre money pits and need work, BUT DAMN! Id expect it to at least stay dry on the inside.

Carl, im sorry i busted your window out. I was just too pissed, ive never been so pissed at a car ever before. That was a definite Rock move.

You want it to stay dry inside? FIX IT! Real rocket science.....huh.

You can't get a handle on your anger over these cars? Get it used to it, if your gonna buy a peice of crap and try to make it good again. You get what you intially pay for............AND.......you can't make honey out of dog s***t unless your willing to spend a whole lot of time and money in doing so. More rocket science......huh? Hang in there Rock! Heck...........thats half the FUN with owning these cars! Working on them, getting down/dirty and personal with 'em. If they give ya to much trouble..............dump her. Theres always more fish in the ocean, ya know.

I really think the issue is AGE & MAINTENANCE, if your car has had five-ten owners the amount that they spend on maintaining thier cars havles each time, mainly because they are paying a lot less for the car in the first place, just remember these are expensive sports cars when new! I know that my S2 was AUS $125,000 when it left the dealer. I was lucky enough to pick it up as only the second owner and have had it for 9 of the 15 years, it still has a 100% Porsche service record, the only things that have been done are general maintenance and a new radiator. It costs me about $800-1,000 a year on average to keep it the way it is, however it has been getting less use of late.
These are old cars and few people take care of them the way they should, I don't pretend to be a mechanic, but have worked on all of my previous cars...except this one!...I leave it to the professionals.

my car had a few issues with it. and i've had plenty of problems, and things have looked pretty bleak, but in the end i suck it up and revel in the fact that even though it's old, it's still a porsche my friend. not the 95 civic that everyone has out there. civics are great cars, but they're still not porsches. it's a high maintenance car bud.

My early good fortune has come back to haunt me lately as I ponder if my recent 951 problems are HG, FPR, WG, ISV, TPS; go ahead pick any 944 parts acronym, I guaranty you it will fail on the 944 series sooner than most any other car I've owned.

is this possibly because of how high the heat is underhood? it just seems to me that these cars get so much hotter than other cars so much faster. when i was replacing my a.a.v., just braising past or breathing on the vacuum lines broke...no no shattered them! my svo buddy was there helping me and he has been a mechanic fo ra loooong time, he has never seen anything like the pvc vacuum hoses and plastic elbows and cloth covered vacuum lines become so brittle. i have replaced almost everythign on my car now, im about to start on the body work a little.....i have not tore into the engine yet. when i finally got my car back on the road after 7 months, i was absolutley pissed at how slow it felt just from having a power steering belt and balance shaft belt back on the car. ok, sorry, i just wanted to share my story.
