Please forgive my ignorance, but what does "bedding" the pads/rotors really mean? How is this done?

Thx...

im getting ready to buy brakes and thought about getting the zimmerman x-drilled.
Now that read this about cracking im having second thoughts. However i only put about 200-400 miles/month on my car with no track use. How long do you think those brakes would last me with my driving habits? Thanks for the help in advance and sorry to jack the thread.

Antonioali - I've only seen x-drilled rotors (cast, drilled, or placed there by the virgin mary) crack under severe use. Usually only seen under track usage. So for usage, they'll last just as long as regular rotors.
