Default HELP!!!!!!!Clicking CV and no torn boot plus fairly new joint.

I have a CV joint clicking the joints have about 20k miles on them. I have been driving the car daily for about a week now and problems. Then coming home tonight I noticed a clicking right rear. I am wondering if I can disassemble loob and reassemble. Because I still have my boots. Anyways I did search I am just curious of what to do and where to get new axles if needed.

I just got mine done. The boots were almost empty. I can't really say that was why they were clanking either. I also had the clanking in the right rear. I did have the cvs cleaned out and repacked with grease. There is a special cv grease that's needed I learned. What its called I dunno. In conjunction with the dry boots. The e-brake cable had play in it. I suspect this may also contributed to the clanking. It was retensioned from the inside of the car somehow. Take the wheel off and see if there's any play in the e-brake cable. That may be the prob.

Constant Velocity. You have 4 CV's on the rear end- an inner and outer on bothe sides of thetranny.

a quick fix is to re- pack with CV grease and swap sides. This will change the wear pattern into the other direction.

It's not a hard job, very messy and can be frustrating. MAKE SURE you have the correct cheesehead (triple square) before you start - a cheap tool will make your life miserable if you strip one of the bolts out.

thanks guys. I will try and get the cheesehead socket and pull it off. I was looking back and saw that the recipt for the axles was just having them repacked and not replaced. They are apparently original 1986 with 86k on them. Should I even bother repacking them if they have already had this done?

Make sure that the bolts didn't back out they make the same click noise if they start to back out.

Use a torque wrench on those bolts.

I did mine, still clicks and all the ball bearings, cv etc are good as new. Could be the brake pads clicking since they are "hanging" in the caliper.

PS: This job redefined "messy", it gets REALLY messy in there

Are they clicking under load only? If so you are probably right and it is the CV's, if not there are many other possibilities. If not, when do you hear it clicking?

Thanks again for the help. It was clicking on and off throttle. Light throttle. When I started out this morning it was clicking, then I got on the highway and pulled the e-brake a little and it seemed to stop. So I am assuming maybe something with the e-brake assembly.

when my CV's started to go- i only got the "clacking" under throttle, as time went by I noticed it on deceleration as well. Eventually it was always present- this was over a 4 month perion- cold weather made it more prevalent.

If you are repacking the CV you dont have to remove them, you can get a needle from autozone for like $9-10 it hooks to a grease gun and you can slip it rught under the boot. Mine started to click about a week ago I used the grease needle to regrease the joints and it stopped and the good thing is that it only took like 10 minutes to do all 4.

Rich,

If you decide to do an R&R on the axles, please give me a call, I'd be happy to offer a hand. (or a lift)
