Hi guys,
Something to keep in mind when using these MSD units is that they generate a lot more electrical energy than the stock ignitions and if you are not using the correct spark plug wires with them, there is the potential for EMI to mess with both the DME and the MSD unit itself. I spent over an hour on the phone with one of MSD’s Electrical Engineers discussing the workings of these units and he was adamant about staying away from solid core wires (stock Porsche wires) due to the potential interference they can cause on the car’s on board computers. He would only recommend using spiral core wires with the MSD units since they inherently do a better job suppressing the large magnetic fields produced by the higher electrical energy. He also told me that spiral core wires actually do a better job than the solid core wires delivering the electrical energy to the plugs since the spiral configuration acts to contain/reduce electrical losses through the wire’s insulation.
Hope this helps!

Can say this wasn't the problem with my MSD then since I haven't used stock/solid core wires for the last 7 years.

Anyway, they have a giant warning in the box as you unpack the thing warning against using solid core wires.

There was an old thread on here about this. It involved the COIL actually getting too hot and causing it to stall. They said the cure for it was to use the ballast resistor. I think ill throw my MSD coil back in there after i get the yellow a tuneup.

So who sells a good spiral core wire that will work with an aftermarket iginition like MSD/Mallory/Jacobs and will fit an 1984 944 8v? Are Magnecor, etc. wires spiral? thanks.

Hi Jaje,

I’ve seen the Magnecor wires that Michael and Daniel are using referred to quite often on Rennlist and people seem to be happy with them. I’ve also seen wires that Pelican carries made by Clewett Engineering that you might look into. I haven’t used either of these brands yet to vouch for them so you may want to do some research into them before you buy. Very often I find I have to make my own custom length wires with custom kits available from someone like MSD if the wires aren’t available for my application. FYI – You may find some helpful info about wires in this thread.

Hope this helps!

Default MSD

To all, about MSD. I have had the MSD om my 86 944NA for over a year. It's
my daily driver and have not had any problems with it. I mounted underneath the splash guard near the vaccum cannister. Used 6AL with Jacobs wires, Bosch
"Blue" coil, stock plugs. Noticed a general increase in response and smoothness. Seemed to be a worthwhile investment.

Have had the MSD 6a and Blaster2 coil with 8mm BERU-end wires and BERU Silverstone plugs on my 86 944na for over 4 years. No probs. I have heard of a few MSD CD units failing, but it's certainly not the norm. Car has been used primarily on track for last 2+ years, with custom chip and race gas. 3 dyno sessions in this config as well.

If anyone is interested in this upgrade, I just bought the MSD 6a and a chrome Blaster II coil for my 924s. Then I bought the 928 and didn't install the ignition system, since I'm selling the 924s.

I paid $180 for the 6a & $48 for the coil and plated bracket + $9 shipping.

If someone wants them, I will sell them for $200 shipped.

I also bought a set of stainless door sills for $67.50 +8 shipping.

I'll sell them for $55 + shipping.

I also have a new black velour dashtopper for 924 or early 944. I paid $50 +$6 shipping.

You can have it for $40 + shipping.
