Default Power Steering Rack Failure

Well, I think the seals in my PS rack are shot. I never had to add PS fluid until just a few days ago. Now it's leaking like crazy. Today, when I pulled back both of the rubber boots on the ends of the rack, about 8-12 ounces of PS fluid came out!

So I'm thinking about getting a PS rack rebuild kit from Rennbay. In the meantime, should I just keep adding fluid every day, or should I remove the PS pump belt and drive with manual steering? If I go for manual steering, do I need to put some grease on the rack teeth or anything?

If you keep the belt on then you had better keep adding fliud. If you take the belt off then forget the fluid and enjoy the workout. You won't hurt the rack or pump if the p/s belt is off.

I also recommend getting the Rennbay kit and "doing it yourself".

Aren't you supposed to use ATF in the PS system? I thought using PS fluid contributes to leaks, in this system.

I just removed the belt, and now it's amazingly difficult to turn the wheels when the car isn't moving! Once you start rolling it's quite okay though. I also noticed that there is a lot more feedback to the steering wheel when you roll over bumps and stuff.

So after I do the Rennbay rebuild kit, you think I should fill it up with ATF instead of PS fluid? I was under the assumption that they are just two different names for the same thing.

Need a working rack from a 94,000 mile, '84 944? I have the rack, pump, and all associated lines.

I'll make you a great deal on the whole lot - or even just the pieces you need.
