Smell of Gas?
Hey guys,
I got my car out on a good spring drive today but I noticed a strong scent of gasoline in the cabin. The car was performing great, but besides being annoying the smell of gasoline cannot be good. Anyone have any insight into this issue? It's a 84' 944.
Thanks everyone!

Did you just fill up today? There is a overflow drain at the gas cap that runs down between the quarter window and rear hatch. It's possible the hose is rotted/disconnected (mine was disconnected) and a couple drops got in there.
I'd investigate and cure any fuel smell w/ the 944(s)...they have been known to spontaniously combust from time to time.

There are several posts on this one, some of them mine. Take a look but IIRC the rear hatch can be the problem too. If it happens or gets worse, with the windows down or the roof open/removed I would check your rear hatch. It is common for the glass to separate from the frame. Clarks garage and this forum have several repair procedures. Seems like a fairly easy fix, but time consuming and delicate. Check your paint on the glass. The black line of paint around the glass on the inside of the hatch. If it is peeling or coming off then the glue is likely coming off too. I will no doubt be doing my rear hatch while the 944 is down for it's busted t-belt.

I just picked up an 84 today and it does the same thing, but only with the windows down. With the windows up and sunroof closed (of course it's closed, it doesn't work ), no fuel odor. I was thinking the hatch seal might cure it, I have one of those sitting at home that I bought for the 951, but the 84 is the new daily so it takes priority.

Check your fuel rail.
Early (type 1) 944's have a flawed fuel rail. The little aluminum tube welded to the back tends to crack. Check for a wet spot. I had this on my car and you really want to replace it with a type 2 fuel rail, because it's been redesigned. If you don't take care of it, fuel could fall onto the exhaust and that's a nasty thing.
