Default Installing rollbar....

I, along with a friend, am about to install my autopower race roll bar. I am just going to bolt it in, with the supplied hardware, I have decided not to weld it. My question is this:

It would look much better if I left the carpet, and just drilled through it as I driled through the car. If I did this, instead of cutting the carpet, and bolting the bar plate fluch against the metal, would there be any drawbacks? A few people are telling me that I may loose some rigidity. What do you guys think??

Thanks in advance!

Dude, I doubt anything will be lost from bolting it through carpet..

Mine is very tight and it does not have the smallest hint of moveing or anything... However I did remove the sound proofing...

^^That's exactly what I thought, but a few argued with me, so I figured I would throw up a post. Thanks.

If you're racing or competing, check the rules!

Here is a link to a post on our PCA Upper Canada Region web site that was started by one of our members who work in the insurance industry. Take what you can from it.

it's not legal in either PCA or SCCA to bolt the rollbar to the floor without removing the carpet. it must be bolted directly metal-to-metal.

i bolted mine directly to the floor and cut out the carpet around the mounting points. it doesn't look bad at all, but it depends on what "bad" means to you. my car is primarily a track car, not a show or road car, so looks are relatively less important.

mark - that link is filled with a lot of interesting anecdotal remarks. some may be true, some may not. the cage/rollbar question has been debated on rennlist quite a bit, and in general probably most of what the author states is true.

The original poster is a licenced appraiser and expert witness for insurance related cases so he knows of what he speaks. State laws will vary on technicalities but most will still apply.

By not removing the carpet, you do not know what you are drilling through. Could be wires, a weaker portion of the floor....etc.

Cut the carpet.
