Default Told by a guy at a porsche parts shop that aftermarket motor mounts will do just fine

So i was on the phone today with one of the larger porsche part shops and the guy on the phone told me that the aftermarket motor mounts are just as good as the oem ones. He stated that for every handful of oem mounts he sells , he sells 100 aftermarket ones. I'm wondering if perhaps the aftermarket mounts have improved. Pricing on the oem mounts were $170 each vs $50 each for the aftermarket ones.
Any opinions?

aftermarket ones suck. new oem mounts run $120 or so....keep this in mind...it's not something you want to have to do twice. this is one of the things you don't want to skimp on.

I think that statement alone shows why he sells only a handfull oem compared to aftermarket ones.

I personally know of 2 people who have had their aftermarket motor mounts fail after only 5000 miles.

I unknowingly purchased aftermarkets last summer. I've got 2500 on them, and I know they are not doing well. If I had known what I know now about P-cars in general...

Maybe this is because the aftermarket ones keep failing?

Um.. mechanics make money on labor- not nearly as much on parts. I bet he sells a lot of aftermarket mounts for cost- and then installs them.

Stick with OEM.

The motor mounts are not exactly a straight forward story. From what I understand there was an Asian manufacturer that came to SEMA some years ago and one of the items they were selling were the motor mounts. These mounts turned out to be junk, failed quickly and were most likely the genesis of the bad aftermarket motor mount stories.

Some suppliers are selling motor mounts called aftermarket for $50 each. If you look at them they are the same upgraded style made by Meyle Products of Germany for Porsche. The only apparent difference between them and the ones that come in the Porsche box is that Meyle has ground off the Porsche trademark cast into the rubber portion of the mount and they may have also hit the Porsche part number cast into the rubber.

That is the only difference you can visually see. The only real question is Meyle dropping manufacturing quality on the mounts they take the Porsche trademark off of? I would doubt it so I think it is worth it to try the "aftermarket" as long as they come in the Meyle box.

Pretty much sums it up. For the time/PITA involved, it's worth it to me (and apparently others) to just do it right the first time. Nothing's worse than redoing jobs you did last year.

I've heard good things about the ones the Zims sells. Guess I'll find out once I install them.

Yeah, Zims and German Parts & Restoration in CA sell the Meyle mounts with the P trademark ground off. I think Paragon does, too, but I have never seen theirs in person.

The aftermarkets I installed on my car failed after about a year. The OE I have on there now are still going strong after about 2 so far.

I got mine from Ian's. They are made in Germany and the shop which installed them said they look exactly like the Porshe ones.
So far, so good, anyway.
