Default Extremely loose front-end...HELP!

Hey folks!

When I drove the '44 home from Chicago last month, I noticed that the front end was a little "loose". Can't really describe it any better than that...feels great going straight down the road, but when I turn the steering wheel even just a little it feels like the front wheel that's on the inside of the turning radius wants to just buckle under.

Any ideas on this? I noticed this problem before I put the wheel spacers on all four corners and I don't really think it's any worse after the installation. Also, I just put four new tires on her and -as far as alignment goes- she maintains a good track going down the road.

So what do you think? Bad tie-rod-ends? Give me some ideas before I tear apart the front-end.

Thanks!

Jeremy

Either tie rods or steering shaft. The latter is prone to u-joint failure.

What Sergey said. And you may also want to think about how old and worn the strut inserts are as well as upper strut bearings. I had as similar experience on my car and it turned out that the Koni yellows I had on the car were so toasted that they actually allowed camber change under load in corners. Very unnerving.

I'm having the same problem, I think my inner tie rods may be bad. How do you check for a bad steering u-joint?

you may want to check ball joints while you're in there.

Grab the u-joints and see if theres any play. Also turn the wheels with your feet while you hold the shaft and see if theres any play (with the car jacked up).

I did have inner tie rods wear out (become noticeably sloppy) at around 150K miles.
