Anyone use their 944 in SCCA AutoX?

You wont ever take FTD in a 951, not even in a stock class, nevermind a prepped/modified class. The car is totally uncompetitive.
NAs are more competitive but there are some VERY fast drivers at some of the SCCA events.
If driving around a parking lot it your idea of a fun way to spend the day then go for it. Otherwise, join NASA, PCA, POC or some such and do DEs, organized track days, etc.

PCA is more relaxed in our area, too. we don't even have a tech inspection
i agree with matt - autox is a nice start, but DE is more fun.

Chicago region SCCA is extremely competitive...I pop in there now and then for fun. Many very fast drivers, with well set up cars. It's not uncommon for ~170+ people to show up for events during mid season. Sometimes the competition can get pretty intense...however there are some good groups of people there (just like anywhere else).

Auto X
FYI-----Central Indiana Region is planning an Auto X later this summer. It will be in Ft Wayne---free location. It probably will be held with either another region or possibly the BMW Club. If your a member you can access the CIR web site or look in the CIRcular later this summer for details. I understand that some of the Ohio regions are very active with an Auto X program. The Corvette people also are active holding events in Kokomo usually inviting other car clubs. I'm not sure if anything is held locally in Indy. I know SCCA has them in Columbus, In. & Kokomo as well.

For the mostly short courses and tight turns that autocrosses use the 951 is never in its powerband. It usally in the low power section of 2nd gear. This leaving you little power on tap. Once the get get rolling you are in great shape, but by then you are often in the next corner already.
You can make the Turbo go fast at autocross, but it very hard. Most times a 2.5L NA will be faster. The really gem of autocross world is the 968 M030. The 968 with M030 sport option is classed in BS in SCCA and has realistic chance of being nationals winning car.

I never liked running SCCA autoX in my 944. It was never as fun as PCA. I generally like PCA because there isn't that bias toward Porsche type cars and the PCA courses are much faster and more interesting. PCA is also a tighter group of individuals and just a friendlier atmosphere. The competition is more fun because you are not out to win anything but a good time with some good people.

Dan,
There are TONS of SCCA autocrosses in the Indy area. I go all the time, but never seen any other Porsches. Let me know when you are planning on going and if I'm not coaching, I will definately be there. As for your 951... if its stock, you really won't have much competition in the area... I only know of 2 other BS participants, an RX-8 and a 350Z. If you are modded, it just depends. The Indy and Columbus region guys are really nice and definately willing to help.
If you have any questions feel free to PM me..
