I have thought about this decision myself. Only it goes further. My next Porsche will be fast. I mean FAST. I bought a BMW 750il with the V12 in it a couple of months ago for a daily beater and WOW, what a motor. Will eat both my 944 and 914 for lunch (no suprise here).
So, I would either (this is me here, may not be relavant to anyone else):
A) Buy an 88 951S or 89 951, then mod it.
B) Buy a 2.7 Boxter then supercharge it.
c) Buy a 968 guards red coupe and turbo it.
My next Porsche will be forced induction and Fast!
I really do not like 911's except for the last generation of the turbo look air cooled ones. But probably would not buy one.

I made the same decision a few months ago. It came down to the uniqueness of the 968, its looks, its interior room, serviceability, and price. I bought the 1993 968 with 61,000 miles and good maint history and some repairs expected for $17,000. The dealer agreed to cover $1000 in parts for some cosmetic items. There are a ton of used off lease (Microsoft) Boxsters in the Seattle area. Not very many 968s and even fewer Cabs. I would not have had that fellow stop me and ask "Wow what kind of Porsche is that?" if I drove a boxster. They are listed by the dozen in want ads. It is a very personal (Style?) choise and either way I think you would love to drive either on a sunny day.
An old 911 - now that is another story. Great cars but if you want a good one you are looking at $25,000 or save a lot of cash for repairs & Maint. Not to say they are not well built... but an 88 Carrera is 17 years old, has no Airbags or ABS, poor A/C, and if you went for a Cab - Big $$$ if it breaks (common, I have had one break twice).
Again - Any of the 3 Porsche models are great in there own way - but do your homework here at Rennlist and drive several - the result is the Degree of Happy Face.... and size of the Credit line.

I say go with a 968 cab, I work at a porsche dealer and see very few cabs and see more 968 coupes the cabs that for sure. Boxsters on the other had I really like the boxster and I will get an 03 S when I can afford one. But boxster are very common I remeber one of my buddies saying to me as we walked through the serice dept. "man there are alot of boxster in the shop". ANd besides 968 looks really cool. I got the chance to see Jacks 968 cab an few times in person and it looks great blue with the Linen(White Interior) looks awesome.
Go with a 968 you won't regert it
Good luck

We've had our 944 for almost 15 years now (and loved every minute of it), so when it was time to get our first drop top I naturally went through the same angst as you. In a perfect world, I would have a 993 Cabriolet but spending $40K + for the right car wasn't feasible. I've driven Boxsters and 944 Cabriolets before, but when it came time to part with the hard earned money we went with a <no hating please> Honda S2000. In terms of bang-for-the-buck (nimble / reliable / affordable / bloody fast) they are tough to beat, and not overly common here in Michigan.
Given your choices, I would suggest you buy the best 968 you can find..........

I'm not familiar with that practice. I know people putting the 6-speed manual in a 944/951 but never heard of doing it the other way around. Any chance you could be thinking of the 5 speed Tip vs 6 speed manual in the 968s?
