Looks like someone didn't adjust the brake correctly and it was dragging for a long time. My 83 has the original shoes at 160K. If adjusted right they should really never wear much.

Weird. Yea. You'd wonder how parking brake shoes would get worn like that unless someone had a penchant for doing tail slides.

My parking brakes stuck on about a year ago. Happened because the plastic on the brake cable housings had cracked an the cables got rusty and siezed up in the housings. Had nothing to do with being misadjusted in that case.

I have a feeling that my parking brakes are shot as well.

I'm guessing this because I drove my 944 for over half an hour on the freeway at over 70 while the parking brake lever was engaged. Didn't notice anything strange while driving.

I have a feeling that they were improperly adjusted. That and they're probably 16 years old! There seemed to be some drag but they also didn't stop the car from rolling when parked.

They should last forever unless you drive with them on.

Not really. I've seen many of them crack and come apart. Somebody will remove and re-install the rotor wrong and crack them or something.
In his case, they look to have some wear on them (perhaps from the car rolling with the parking brake on), however the missing section seems to be from cracking and peeling off.

I had this issue on my 86. I changed the rear rotors, and upon removing them, found huge cracks all the way through the parking brake shoes.

Yea the missing section seems to have cracked and crumbled away. The half that is left flakes off pretty easily just by touch.

I left a voice mail with Jason at Paragon to order a new set. What name does he post under here? Hopefully I can get them back together for a little road trip next weekend.

They're about $90 for a full set. I didn't replace mine, since only about half crumbled off, I just always pulled the parking brake on, then let the clutch out a bit to see if it would hold before getting out.
