Default M490 Option Speaker Sizes?

The M490 Option on the 944's and 968's was the 10 speaker option which had 2 drivers under the armrest on each side and a tweeter up by the side mirror and window controls. What size were these speakers? I have reason to believe that the sizes were different on the 944 S2 and turbo cars from 88 on and the 968 cars. Can someone check or let me know?

I don't know for sure, but there are some pretty detailed pics available if you do a search on 10 speaker stereo that might help you out. I've got a 968 so I can give details on that if you need them.

It kinda depends on how you measure them. Some say they are 6.5" in the rear, with a mid/tweeter, 5.25 and 3.5" in the door boxes, and a tweeter up higher in the door. I say they are 6", 5" 3" and tweeters I never measured. I can check sometime and see if the larger measurements would fit but my 10-speaker stuff is hard to get to right now.

well, because I'm looking to upgrade to improve my stereo options and need to know what the speaker sizes are so I know what to upgrade to.. and if the 944's had 5.5" and 3.5" vs a 968 5" and 3" that makes a difference as to which panels I will want to buy. Hope that made sense...

I just figured somone had upgraded their factory speakers and could tell me what sizes they got.. someone with a 968 and someone with a 944/51/S2... I like the look of the 68 panels, but the Stereo FAQ has different sizes for the 44 and 68 and I was looking for some clarification.

Thanks.

i thought they were the same panels, but mine are miles away and only from the 89 turbo i believe, so i can't check for you right now.

6.5" in the rear is a definate, the tweeters are 1", the door panels are another question. I had them off the other week, and IIRC they *looked* around 4"! I know that doesn't help!!!

Send me a PM in about an hour (when I will hopefully be logged off!), and it'll remind me to take out 4 screws and check for you for when I log on in the morning (it's 11pm here!)

I dug out the 10-speaker setup for measuring. The rears are 6", but I think a 6.5 will fit easily. The mounting holes are 6.75" apart, center to center. The low mid's mounting holes are 5.75" center to center (about a 5" speaker) The high mids are 3.5" center to center (3" speaker.) Aftermarket speakers tend to have more cone diameter, extending out towards the mounting holes. These have a big plastic ring outside of the surround and a lot of metal in the chassis.
