Default my 944 needs something

Hi, I have a 1987 944 NA with 90K miles that sits in my driveway that vibrates at around 3300 RPMs. Also, it smells like something is melting after a short drive. Someone was saying that it might be the clutch disc which I know is a pain in the 944's. I want to get it fixed but i'm only 17 and $$$ is an issue.

Any advice?

#1. Welcome to Rennlist.
#2, The SOW (Southwest Ohio Wrenchwerkers) are not too far away- Cinci/Dayton area. Look for "SOW GTG" for the next get-together.
There are some great Rennlisters in Louisville..

Sounds like the rubber center clutch is going.. Is it the original clutch?
Smells like? rubber burning?
Check out the link in my signature..

Justin, I am glad to see you finally posting
I am happy to help you diagnos this problem some time, but I am almost totally sure from how you described it that it is the clutch disc going. Its a big job, but nothing you cannot do with a little advice/help.
Now we have 4 people on here from Louisville, look out SOW!

have your belts been changed recently...if the balance shafts weren't in time with the motor a vibration would start to occur at around that rpm and continue to redline...and if they aren't in time that could also mean something else is wrong which is causing them to rub against suomething, thus the burning smell.......just my guess

it is the original clutch. The vibration only happens from around 3300 - 3500 rpms.

Cool, another Louisville owner. I'm from Louisville but am currently at school in TN. We'll have to have a local 944 meet this summer.

Right, probably balance shaft out of synch. Even some Porsch mechanics get it wrong, but it sounds like you might have belt problems too. Replace them, they are probably due anyway. A bad timing belt is the single most frequent cause of engine destruction with these cars. If yours are old, better replace them now regardless.
