In 1970 VW commissioned Porsche to create an Audi sports car from VW-Audi parts bins. Then VW cancelled the project and Porsche bought the design back for 160 million DM, and was built by Audi in Neckarsulm. The shape was designed by Dutchman Harm Lagaay. From after that they just made it better.

I think that most folks who question your cars pedigree are just looking for a way to justify an absence of the the Porsche crest in their garage. At least that’s what I tell myself.

Some people say the 911 is nothing but a 3rd, 4th, 5th generation VW Beetle. That statement is somewhat true. Does that make the 911 any less car? I don't think so. People who attempt to put down any car are just doing it because they wish they had one. Just like car slave says.

Somebody told me that the first Corvettes were made with a chassis from the Chevy pick up trucks. I never researched that to see if it was true but again so what.

IIRC, VW owned Porsche and Audi when the 924 and 944 were designed and first produced. The Porsche family bought he company back in the mid 80s.

That would explain the use of so many VW and Audi parts on the 924/944 cars. I think the PN that start with 477 are actually Audi parts.

BTW, lest we forget, Dr. Porsche designed the VW beetle in the 30's. And the air-cooled boxer engine was used on the 911s until the 996, right?

^^^ To the best of my knowledge, Porsche has always been an independent company, not owned by any other (and today it is the smallest "real" independent car company). They always had close ties with VW/Audi, but not ownership (but someone else who knows better should chime in and verify this)..

I have to second the sentiment that car_slave and johnny b good echoed - who really cares how much VW lineage your Porsche has? That doesn't make it any less of a car! VW? - so what? What's wrong with VW or Audi? I didn't buy a 944 - really a car that *anyone* with a real job can afford - for badge bragging rights, just to say "I own a Porsche" . . . I bought it because I thought it was a good car. The kind of people like the coworker of the person who started this thread are the kind of people who I (thankfully) don't associate with... Those kinds of conversations are nothing but wasted time..

Porsche has never been owned by VW or Audi.

There have been close ties over the year, but ownership of Porsche has remained by Porsche only.

Now back in the late 60's early 70's Porsche Cars North America did not exist. What did exists was a North American Marketing agreement between VW and Porsche to Market Audi and Porsche together. Hence the Porsche+Audi logos on Posters and 917-30 racers of the era. Some time in the late 70's this North American Marketing agreed dissoved and Porsche Cars North America was formed to Market Porsche's in the US.

Now interstingly enough up till a couple years ago the entire VW group was lead by Porsche. Ok not Porsche AG of Germany, but by Ferdinand Piech. Those of you who know Porsche history recognize that name as Ferry Porsche's Newphew and man that lead the competition department at Porsche while developing the 906, 908, and of course the 917. In the 70's some time the Porsche Family was removed from day to day running of the company.
