Some WD40, tap key from right to left with small brass hammer, tap key from left to right, and tap it straight down a few times will loosen the key a bit before removal with cutter, chisel, or screwdriver makes it a lot easier....

Some of these tips are golden - thanks everyone. I've tried to find a couple of new keys to buy, but they are like rocking horse poo around here (ie very rare)
Bruce, your picture makes it look so easy! Your flywheel lock did the job perfectly - I kind of wish I got the pin spanner for the bal shafts from you as well, instead of having to make a jig out of wood and bolts/drill bits that kept breaking!
Hopefully should be able to have a good go at the key tomorrow - it is killing me having it stuck in a friend's garage 10 miles away .
