Default what makes a lifter noisy?

Im trying to understand what makes a lifter noisy besides poor oil flow.

Can someone please explain it to me?

I'd say if there was a weird clearance issue where there was too much room between the lifter and valve...that could cause a ticking problem. My e30 325i has a terrible ticking problem but those cars supposedly are all a little noisy.

or if it's crudded up from running nasty oil. I've not met a lifter yet that good clean oil and Marvel Mystry oil couldn't shut up

oh yeah, theres another similar product that I've heard of, can't recall the name tho.

Andy I would like you to meet the lifters on my jeep, I've tried everything to make them shut up but to no avail. Must have been that month that they ran with practically no oil.

Seafoam is another oil/gas addative that is supposed to be pretty good at cleaning stuff up.
