Guess I might have jumped the gun. Going over other tensioner pictures I've saved the base is square while the pad is arched and pointed on the ends. Looks like some wear but not as bad as some of the pictures I've collected.

Jonathan - Sorry to see that the 968 is having trouble. Unfortunately, I'm no expert on the 16V heads, and I have little to say here that has not already been said. I'm sorry I have not been able to call, but I'm not sure how much use I would be in this matter anyways. I'll try to give you a ring tomorrow evening if that works for you.
Guys - If this is NPS's black 968, I don't know the exact mileage, but I think it had around 85K on the clock last summer when he picked it up.
I looked through the PET and saw that unfortunately, the S2 does use different cams than the 968.
S2:
Intake: 944 105 277 07
Exhaust: 944 105 275 09
968:
Intake: 944 105 277 09
Exhaust: 944 105 275 10

Mark Kibort has the same problem on his 928 race car...and has continued to race it that way!!!!! He found his cam teeth attached to the oil drain plug magnet. His cams keep shedding teeth, he just keeps racing it that way...........
Here's a link to one of his threads https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...ight=cam+teeth
As far as I know, he hasn't yet replaced a cam.

Thanks to everyone for your responses!
First of all, thanks to all of you who have taken the time to offer advice. I truly appreciate it. I have been so busy today and am about to fall asleep as I type this, but I wanted to at least take a few moments to thank you all.
I called Sunset today and their prices on the camshafts are $683 and $660; so, thankfully, they are quite a bit cheaper than the MSRP of $913 and $883. Jeff is always so helpful and kind. I called a couple of other dealers, too, and sure enough, they quoted me the MSRP. While I am heartened to see
that Sunset's prices (as always) are significantly cheaper than MSRP, I am still going to investigate the options that some of you have presented here.
While I am saddened that my $30.00 seal/gasket job has now skyrocketed in cost, I look on the bright side in that the chain did not break or come off, thereby rendering the engine a heap of metal... I also look forward to the opportunity to learn more about the engine, and to the challenge of
repairing it. With all of your help, I think I might just be able to accomplish it!
I wish that I had time to individually respond to each of you, for I appreciate each and every response, but because I am about to fall asleep on my keyboard, I'm afraid that I can't at the moment. Maybe I will have time to do so later.
Note: the car has 89,000 miles, and after reviewing its extensive records, I have been unable to find anything about camshaft work.
