1987 944T vs 1987 Corvette

I agree with you, they *might* be safe in a crash, but it just shook around too much for me to feel safe driving it.
Ahhh!! Good one, batmobile! Nice. Forget looking out the rear window in the Corvette. At least in the 944 you know you've got about 8" behind the rear spoiler for backing up, (with stock US rear bumper, less with RoW, or GT ones), even if it feels like you're about back into something!

I had driven a Vette way back before i got my 944. I like the Vette looks from back then. They feel really planted because of those huge rear tires...but only when sitting still.
The car felt raw. The seating has never been good in American cars. It just...it wasnt enjoyable. The 944 on the other hand absords you. You feel like the car is part of you. A 944 feels better 100% when driving too.
And Corvettes might be safe as previously said...but I personally trust only cars coming from the Porsche/Peich families as being safe. They have been innovating it for years and i believe set the benchmark for active and passive safety.

I looked at corvettes for awhile. Quickly decided the only ones I liked were the C5 series. Since my wife hates them (her opinion is not printable in a public forum), I'll be stuck with p-cars. I could have a worse fate.

The C4 was a good car, great bang for the buck, it has some serious drawbacks though. I would, however, take a 96 LT4 Corvette over a 944 S2 any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I was talking to my cousin that is an engineer for the general. he told me the general has all the safety tricks the competition has. the problem is they cannot produce a car as safe as say a 40k saab (which was rated the safest many many times) for the price of a cavalier.
the hidden difference between an expensive and inexpesive car is the hidden safety stuff. with the new CAD software, the safety of today's less expensive cars is better than the safety of yesterdays more expensive cars. I almost got sucked into the safety spiel when I bought the aurora. then i looked at what each was advertising in their brochures, and it was the same. bottom line, weight equals safety at the cost of fun.

One of the big car mags (R&T or C&D) did a comparo test of these two cars in 1986 that I re-read recently... it may have even been a re-print when C&D did their recent comparo of the 911 vs C6. I remember that the early Vette did better than the 951, and the C6 beat the 911.
A month or so ago, I attended some sort of "tour" put on by GM that included a special seat-of-the-pants comparison between the new C6 and a few other cars including an '04 911. The biggest difference between the two for me was that the 911 communicated to me much better, and the brake feel was incredible. The Vette was fast and had great brakes, but they weren't as managable as the 911 brakes. There was also a lot more "rubbery" roll feeling when transitioning in the Vette than the 911. I've seen comparisons where the Vette out-performs the 911 in all sorts of venues, but I don't think it will ever have the "feel" of a Porsche.
That said - my brother had an '00 Z06... it was incredibly powerful and handled great, but the noise in the cabin was unreal. Not a highway car at all!
