164k Bypass Valve..or Grot
Ok, so there has been the debate here and there about the K&N air filter.
Well, which-ever side you are on use this to your advantage
I started getting(not the honk) but what I call the canary.
When it would Bypass it would make a fluttering sound like a little bird flying around. So I pulled it and surprise surprise surprise it was torn.(on another note I looked at two other high mileage BOV's from other 951's and they both looked like mine) But the most interesting thing was the level of grit and dirt inside.
The PO before me used a K&N filter with the stock air box and snorkle.
I replaced it with a factory new one with the brass piston-no more Rubba!
And the sweetest swish.
Grot-Perrin Joke.

IIRC, the 993 uses a metal insert like the one you have pictured. I have a SAAB replacement one, which is identcal to the stock 951 unit except its supposed to last longer.

there are a number of other bypass valves that fit as well, the stock 944 one is identical to that on several other engines, most notably the vw 1.8T, which has a huge selection of aftermarket parts.
