Default guess i need to eat my words....

.....regarding this thread, in which i described my efforts to reinstall the camshafts and pulley with the correct cam timing.

i took my car to my mechanic last week for an alignment and to determine why it wasn't starting easily. turns out (1) the reference sensor was bad, and (2) i installed the cams with too much advance. so my mechanic used the dial indicators to set the camshaft timing correctly. it seems i lost just a little zoom on the top end, but the peace of mind is knowing the cams are set correctly now.

i still stand by my original statement that you can install the cams this way and then get them professionally timed correctly. i only paid $148 to correct the camshaft timing with the dial indicators.

Hmmm, wouldn't advancing the cams give you more low-end torque? I know from personal experience that retarding the cams by about 10 degrees really opens up the top-end and prevents the kamikaze-diving torque-curve.

i don't know. i'm not mechanically educated enough to know that. i just know he said they were advanced a little too far, and by my "butt dyno" it seems the car has just a little less high rpm acceleration. i don't know, maybe the DME needs a chance to reset itself a bit or something. plus, i'm still in the break-in period and not revving over 5000 rpm. maybe once i get past that stage it will feel faster.
