I have to say what i like most about this idea is the entry level $30,000 price range. the body is not bad and you guys who mentioned making it a car that would compete with the Lotuse Elise I think that is a great idea. SOmeone else has to challage that market.

I definately think Porsche should make a car to compete with the elise. There is NOTHING on the market right now that is even close. If Porsche brought back the 914 and say put a 2.0T in it, it would be unstopable. The body style would definately have to be a slammed 2 seat targa..

although subaru's engine isn't a copy of porsche's design (it was taken/purchased from a german company inthe 60s) - forget the 914, that's what the 986 is for. 1.8 litres is too small, it would be in an econocar class. they just should bring back *our* car again...! do something with that cayenne engine, dammit...

whats wrong with the WRX STi engine? Didnt Porsche help design it? Using a preexisting powerplant would be a definite way to approach that pricemark they listed, although I expect the car would be closer to 35k.

New Porsche $30,000 car, fine. Why not just stay within the mark, and as long as Porsche had their fingers in designing the engine, it counts fine.
Ergo, what's in the Mark: Porsche, Audi, VW, and if Porsche did help to design the WRX STi engine, it's fair game.
I personally would like to see the 944 resurrected, and stay strictly Porsche, or at least 924, and Porsche/Audi, which I think would be more like the $30,000 price sticker.

I personally would not have a problem with it, but the SUV is doing enough damage to the Porsche name to a lot of purists - this would only make things worse. At least the SUV is 50% VW - at least it's a family relative.

Build it with a 3.2L/3.4L flat 6, hard top, 6 speed, and lose the navigation, heated leather seats, headlight sprayers, full leather interior. Oh wait, that is the next Boxster hardtop...

Matt agreed, why loose its roots??
cheap porsche (VW), light as can be, "no creature comforts"
a 3.6L is the way to go, and a stiffened frame...
why turn it into a subie?

i'd love to see a modern porsche with the dimensions of a 914 or an elise, but make it wet-sump so we can flog it around the track all day and never worry about spun bearings (or RMS).

A 3.6L pure sportscar would canibalize Boxster sales. Remember when the 951 Turbo S actually was FASTER than the flagship 930 for a couple of years? Won't happen again at Stuttgart. Hence, a smaller, lighter car that emphasizes the intangibles we all love so much makes much more sense. Incidentally, Mitsu took a page from Porsche and offers an RS Evo that is actually CHEAPER than the standard Evo. That theory IS gaining popularity with the other makers, too. Mazda has a hit with the RX8 and the light-is-right formula, and I think they've got an RS version in the works, too. So there is hope that the industry will collectively put the "sport" back into sportscars.
Building an Elise- beater would mean smallish 4 cylinder power. The Subie motor, while hell-strong and reliable, would create more brand confusion, and as Erik pointed out, Porsche already has their share of disillusioned fans with the Pepperwagon. Now, drop the Audi/ VW 1.8 or 2.0L turbo in it and suddenly you've got game. Keep the weight WAY down low like the Lotus. It CAN be done; afterall, the US Elise still scales in awfully light, so Porsche can't say it's impossible. But will they do it?
Not under current management whose focus is towards counting Pepper profits and watching bottom lines. Sadly, we DON'T represent the broad end of the market. Why pay for a stripped down, kick in the head driver's machine when for the same price you can get an RX-8 or Evo or WRX or RSX-S with leather and all the bells. The best hope is a true Boxster Club Sport/ RS or what have you. Strip one of those down to 2500- 2600#, price it less than the entry model, and it prices and performs right there with the Elise. Again, though, don't see it happening.

Hell yes I'd buy one! I seriously doubt it'd be able to hit the target price but even if not, I'd probably be willing to pay $30K-$35K, especially if it's available in a softtop or targa. As a coupe, it looks a little like it's lacking something, but I'd still get it.
