I only liked the market update section of Exce11ence the very first time I read the article.

But after awhile, you realize that the exact same article is getting repeated year after year with just the numbers slightly updated -- and I personally find the numbers to be uninformative for around here.

I agree with Joe, they should 'rewrite' the content at least somewhat for each successive report. I'm glad to see they're starting to give the waterpumpers a bit more respect, they've always undervalued them.

Maybe thats just in California. But no matter where in the US you are, if you paid even close to 3k for a poor 944 then you're not very good at using your head. Availability shouldnt be an issue. Finding a garbage 944 in CA and shipping it anywhere in the US would be cheaper.
Ok, you're blind by CA right there... Around where I am, IF you can even find one for sale thats worth lookign at... a very well used example is from 3000-4000... i've seen many for 5-6 around here that werent even in perfect shape.

For example, a guy who sells very reasonalby priced around here,,, 120k miles, guard red, AUTO, few leaks here and there, slightly shabby interior...

3000 bucks... and that was the best deal i found after looking around a month or so, staying within 50-75 miles of me.

I haven't seen this issue of Excellence, but all of the comments and numbers sound VERBATIM to what was already published in Panorama about a year ago...

Huge difference in prices from east to west coast. I paid $1500 for an 86 n/a in poor to fair condition. A close friend of mine sold a CLEAN 86 for 4K and he said THAT was tough to get. Another friend sold a very nice 84 for like 3500.

Bruce should really scrape the old comments that he keeps re-using for each 944 update. I swear, he uses the exact same paragraph about the turbo's each time he does the update on the model. Who is paying this guy to keep printing the same article over and over and over... what a joke!

Lol, i was considering buying excellence magazine from the link given in the first page of this thread... but it looks like it isn't such a great mag anyway.

Excellence is the cheapest Porsche magazine. Interesting articles occasionally, cool pictures and I personally like to look at the ads. Thats why i subscribe. 911 and porsche world is the best I've read but I dont feel like paying 100+ bucks a year to subscribe.

They're obviously representing only the U.S. market and although many owners disagree, at the end of the day these values tend to represent the going rate in the States for these cars pretty well.

The credibility associated with Excellence magazine in spite of its shortcomings in the 944 department also make these lists a good tool for buyers and sellers to agree on a final price. YMMV.

The main problem with lists like these is that the older a model becomes, the condition varies more widely and the more variables are involved. The poor/fair/excellent breakdown is not only too general, the spread is invariably too narrow. 944's are simple compared to antique/classic lists, where collectibility and arcane, esoteric factors abound- buyers get more and more knowledgeable and picky as the cars age and the owners become enthusiasts, rather than just drivers. Stuff most people don't know about the cars becomes important selling and value points. This is where the 944 is headed, hopefully the market might reflect this eventually.
