I've paid several PPIs and never once went to a dealer. Always go to a specialist who has a good reputation, and Rennlist is a great place to start. I've bought several cars sight unseen and have not once had a problem. In fact, I'm getting ready to test that again. I just paid for a PPI from a known specialist. They provided excellent information and I talked to three different people there for a total of more than an hour. Two thumbs up, the pictures look great and I've agreed to purchase the car. I'll let you know how it turned out in about two weeks when I fly out to drive it home and see it in person...for the first time.

They don't do PPI's anymore but they are my indie shop of choice in this area. They did my cooler reseal job and the water pump/belt/roller job a year later. If I don't want to do it myself, Zim's is my choice in DFW. I have been burned by a few other shops. I've also had some stuff done by Nine-Eleven Enterprises as well. No complains there either but they seemed to be a bit more expensive than Zim's.

From my personal experience I wouldn't ever go to a Porsche dealer for anything (unless of course I was buying a new Porsche). Wayyyyyy overpriced, especially for parts. Use this forum or join your local PCA club and you will soon find out who the local Porsche expert is who won't rip you off (hopefully). I like my 944 simply because I can work on it myself. As I always have said, if you want it done right, you gotta do it yourself. Had to get a tech inspection for my last DE event. Went to a supposedly reputable Porsche repair facility (have to get tech inspection from a PCA recognized repair facility) and payed $160 to have brake fluid flushed and replaced and car checked out. On way to the track, the clutch master cylinder went, though was still able to drive it, and on the first lap at track was blackflagged because of excessive smoke which turned out to be from the "Porsche Expert" overfilling my engine. Used my tool box as a drain pan and burned my hand with hot oil to remove the exess oil, but after that the car never smoked again and was able to have fun, though clutch was screwed up. Cylinder was probably on it's way out and the flushing finished it off.
Dealerships are all basically the same. Just went in for my 30,000 mile warranty checkup for my GMC truck-they wanted $450 to replace the air filter, flush the coolant and replace trannny and differential fluids. Can do it myself for about $400 less.

My local dealer (2 miles away) charged me $27.50 for an oil filter! (had to have it that day) They also wanted $8 each for the 15 little bulbs that go in the instrument cluster when they are $1.05 ea from pelican/paragon etc. I agree, they cringe when they see one of these cars because most of them know less about the car than the typical rennlist owner.

Update: Well it is the oil pan gasket. Euro Motorworks will be doing the gasket $950 and rod bearings (while your in there) $350. I ordered a new rebuilt steering rack $225 from ADCO in Houston.

I also spoke to the PO last night. He is a very nice person and felt bad about the situation. He offered to send me a $500 check back. I feel very comfortable with that. Most people would say you bought it as is, its yours. I am anticipating having everything complete by the end of next week. I will repost with pics when I get the car back. Thanks for all the input.

I agree with Dan...the fact that he is throwing $500 bones back your way speaks volumes...
