Default Anyone willing to help me w/brake job?

Since I bought the 951, there has always been a strange sound, seemingly coming from the rear brakes when I apply the brakes. The sound is primarily noticeable when nearing a complete stop, so it is pretty annoying when you're pulling up to a stop light and squeaking all over the place.

Anyway, I was hoping someone in the Baltimore area would be willing to help me diagnose and change out my brakes. I've never done brakes before so I don't want to go it alone.

I'd also need to know what parts to get. I know that's hard to determine without knowing what the real problem is, but I figure I might as well do pads all around, and if need be rotors.

Any advice and assistance is greatly appreciated.

Chuck, have you been to www.clarks-garage.com? Excellent brake write up, you should have no trouble with it if you are at all mechanically inclined. You will need to check the thickness of the rotors (or your local auto parts store can do it for you). More than likely, the pads are squeeling-is the sound just a squeek, or is it grinding?

I've gone over several how-to's on brakes....I am mechanically inclined, but brakes are NOT something I want to screw around with on my own as a first timer.

The noise is a cross between a grinding and a squealing.

Hi Chuck,

Wish I were closer to Baltimore, since I've already done the brakes on an identical setup (944S2) and I agree it's a lot better to work in pairs than by oneself.

Ben is right about the write up in Clarks-Garage. I used that when I did the brakes on my S2. Basically, what you will need is a set of pads (4 per axle), some brake silencers from your dealer (8 per axle) and a basic set of tools, including channel-lock pliers, needle-nose pliers, assorted screwdrivers, etc.

The factory Pagid pads are extremely expensive. If I had to do it again, I would probably get some PBR pads, which are also very good and much more economical.

One thing to look out for are the brake pad wear sensors, as they are likely to break when you remove the old pads. You can order replacements from your dealer at around $15 each.

Here's a complete list of parts to do the brakes on your car:

Factory Brake Pads (8): 951.351.939.08
Brake Silencers (4): 964.351.096.01
Brake Silencers (4): 964.351.096.02
Brake Silencers (4): 964.352.096.00
Brake Silencers (4): 964.352.096.01

If you have to replace them:
Brake Pad Wear Sensors (4): 944.612.365.01

You will also need:

Brake cleaning fluid
Moly based grease
Hammer or mallet
Floor jack
Jack stands

Be careful with the ABS sensor connectors when taking the brakes apart. Take your time and it will work out just fine.
