Default Battery - Again

OK, we all know that Code Red is a garage queen. She seldom sees the light of day, but when I need the car I really need it and that means it has to start. I've gone through several "less than respectable" batteries in the last three years - usually Walmart or K-Mart brands (BTW - they don't carry juice for our rides anymore). But this year I'm looking to upgrade and I want this one to last. I think I'll be adding an "off" switch to save juice (especially since the radio is the most crappy one I have ever heard anyway - actually I think it's the speakers, but I digress). So, what's this years "hot" unit.

I go through a battery a year in this car! No big stereo either etc...

PS thanks for the 968 mirror write up! I will need it this week!

And I really don't mind the "battery a year" - it's just getting hard to find a store that carries one that fits our cars (at least at the 4 places I looked today - Wallmart, AutoZone, O'Rilleys, and Sears).

O'Reilly in Dallas stocks group 41's almost all of the time. But I have to special order copper Bosch plugs. Go figure.

I wonder if a Battery Tender would help this?

If by Battery Tender you are refering to one of those "always charging" units - I have one, but have not installed it yet. Unfortunately - the current battery (pardon the pun) ain't gonna cut it no more. I've had it on the charger for three days and still no go.

A battery a year? Are you kidding? I guess maybe since it doesn't get driven a lot I can kind of understand that, but the Optima that was in my car lasted almost 5 years and was actually still in good shape when I replaced it with a Duralast of the proper BCI group size, which has lasted very well over the past year. And the Interstate before the Optima was at least 2 years old when I replaced it and it still worked like a charm.

Keith, go find an Interstate battery dealer near you (Firestone store?) Either a group 41 or group 91 should fit.

Sears has them in stock here. The european something or whatever it's called by die hard. I have the same battery in both the 951 and GTI. Oh I think it's called the international and it will run you 100$ and it's a 3 year free replacement and 7 years prorated price discount or what it's called.

Kevin - I've got part of the day off tomorrow, so I'll see what I can find local. I was going to use the 951 to run a service call in Belleville, but with no juice I'll have to take Joyce into work in Houston and then head out. I thought I'd drop by and see you, but since you're off I'll make it another day.
seb928S - I tried the local Sears - they were out of stock.

The Auto Zone 'Gold' has a 3-year replacement @ around $79, and has 1000 CCA!. Use them in both P-cars and my boat. Never had a problem with getting one replaced (only the boat batt ever needed replacement!)

Diehard from Sears has always worked well for me.

In Europe I use the Porsche OE "Moll" brand. Last one lasted my 4 years and the car sat a lot. I disconnect it when the car is idle for extended periods. Do you?
