Default Speedometer Question?

Just wondering if anyone could tell me why the speedometer on my 83 944 only goes to 85mph? I have seen pics of other early cars on which the speedometer goes a lot higher. Just wondering why this is? thanks

Mine goes to 140 on my 83 944NA. Yours is probably a holdover from the old '70s law mandating 85mph as the max indicated speed on all cars.

Interesting... mine goes to 160 and has a last line for what I would presume to be 170 mph. Maybe an early 924 guage was put in at some time?

I would suspect a gage from a 924. Just out of curiosity, what color are the numerals?

Early 944 gages have yellow numerals, while the 924s have green or white numerals.
