Has anyone sent their cluster out to be professionally repaired (e.g. North Hollywood Speedo) ?

Any ideas how much it costs ? I'm guessing it's the gear that's broken, but after breaking off the speedo needle on my Audi trying to fix it, I'm very tempted to jsut send it out. Can they replace the reflectors while they are in there ?

I was quoted at 100 bucks from a place in arizona called stuggart soutwest. The gear is only a few bucks though.

I haven't seen the gear for less than $40. $100 seems like a pretty good deal if they include the gear.

It's a pretty easy and well documented fix- if money or time is no option, send it out. If you are considering white face guages, now's the time.

I had mine done at a shop in Orange County for $75 several years ago (other 944s) and that included taking the guage out and re-installing it!
Now I know better than to push the trip reset when rolling down the freeway!

I bought the replacement gear from Travis last spring (great service from Rennbay). He gave me instructions on how to take apart the cluster. I replaced it myself. I can be done. I had to pull the cluster out again because I didn't get the plugs back in properly, but since then its worked fine. My old gear had some broken teeth and when I pulled it out, it broke apart.

Going slow and being careful, it took me about 2 hours start to finish. I wish now that I had replaced the light bulbs.

As far as the pushing the trip reset during rolling...that should not be a problem with a new gear.
The reason people stated not to do this is because with an old gear it is more likely to break that weak plastic.

For "fun" I put a new gear in and reset it at many speeds-up to 125mph!
No problem there.
And I have done it a tons of time to make sure.
So live in fear or use it like you want.
Oh, yeah and I do love pulling my instrument cluster out...just not in public.

Meant to add this with my last post, just hit reply too soon...

I've also put in one of Rennbay's odometer gears and the install went surprisingly well. Not too difficult of a job, just gotta be careful not to break anything. The odometer has been running fine for the most part ever since, it stopped turning about a month later but I suspect some bits of the old gear got wedged in somewhere and jammed it. I went in there and cleaned it out real well and haven't had a problem since.

Bottom line is if you think you're up for it, you can probably save some money by doing it yourself.
