Can side mirrors be repaired?
Hello,
On my 944, the black trim on my side mirrors is in pretty bad shape. Can this part be replaced? If so, is there a link to the how to? I searched the forum with no luck. Also, has anyone tried to install turnsignals into the mirrors. The newer Mercedes have this feature in which I really like it.
Thanks, Lee

The black part does separate from the mirror body.
How bad is yours? I'm sure it could be repainted with some matte black.
If yours are really bunged up, I have the old mirrors from my car that I could part with.

Yes they can be repaired... Yesterdays project was completely removing my mirrors, taking them completely apart, sanding them to bare metal, prepping them, priming them and getting themr eady for paint Thursday.
Its a little bit of a project... but is fairly straight forward.
What you will find is that the motors for the mirror are built into the black part you are speaking of, so replacing just that part would probably be fairly expensive from the dealer.

To remove the entire mirror off the car, you will need to pivot the top half of the mirror toward the front of the car to reveal a allen head bolt. Remove this bolt, and the mirror will come free from the car. The largest problem i would forsee is that the wireharness does not have much slack on it. You may need too splice in a longer set of wires. I had so much trouble reconnecting everything when i replaced my drivers side mirror, i just left everything until disconnected until the spring.

If there is no physical damage to the black part of the mirrors (the rubber) - you can bring them back to like new shape with a product called "Mother's Back to Black". I did this on my first 944 and the results were incredible. The black rubber had large areas of hazzy white, but the "Back to Black" returned everything to black and kept it there. And you don't need to remove anything to use it. Of course, if you do decide to take them off, you might hit the 968 Aero Mirror Upgrade link in my sig for instructions on removal of the flag mirrors.

The "Back to Black" will also remove the wax residue. This should be fairly easy to find. Most auto stores carry it. I absolutely HATE Pep Boys - but they have it there as well.
