yes you're supposed to break the engine in with regular dino oil. then after the first 500 miles change the oil again, then when you retension at 1500 change over to synthetic. (you don't have to wait until 1500...that's just what i did)

great job buddy! don't worry, it's just marking it's territory. you'll get that puppy perfect in no time!

Joseph,

As others have said, probably a leak in the corners where the gasket needs some help from RTV. Let us know how your latest fix worked !

Having just done a rebuild on my 951, I have a very minor leak from the oil pan gasket. I suspect the same problem - not enough RTV in the back corners of the gasket. Unfortunately fixing it is a major PITA !!

Good luck man - congrats on a successful rebuild !

Default UPDATED - bad oil leak after startup from 16 valve

UPDATE - so I removed the cam cover last night, cleaned it up with acetone, cleaned the head surface and gasket with acetone, and sealed both sides with permatex RTV black gasket maker. let it cure for about 19 hours and started it up again this afternoon.

it still leaks just as bad as it did before!! :: in the same exact place. i probably lost 400cc of oil in the time the car ran.

good news: the car DID run for about 4 minutes, however, so that is good news. a few strange noises, but mostly the power steering rack needing fluid and screeching belts from the oil on them.

so now what do i do? the RTV apparently didn't help; maybe it's the camshaft bridge to head surface?

Look close to see if it's the cam plug, I'm thinking that I recall some of the guys using a little gasket maker on those around the perimeter.

are you talking about the round black plug at the end of the camshaft that you can see in the photo, connected to the little plastic "arm" that's bolted to the head?

if so, i don't think it's coming from there. i can clearly see it spilling from under the edge of the cam cover. it's either the gasket or the cam bridge.

I would think it is the cam bridge as well. I would pull it off and reseal it. You have to make sure the sealer goes back to where the v/c is or it will leak. It is pressure feed to lube the cam.
