Default USPS pickup option

Anyone have experience with the pickup on demand service that the United States postal service provides. Apparently they come to your house and will pickup the packages for $12.5. I have a set of wheels I will need shipped, and thought this would be a great service.
Any input?

you can also just hand it to your mail carrier when they come to deliver your mail if you used their pre paid postage thing.

Yeah, I saw that. The thing I don't understand is,
"Apply postage to each package prior to pickup."
How are you supposed to do that? When you take it to the post office they weight it for you and put the label on.

No, you weigh it, go to usps.com and print and pay for label with credit card. Tape it to teh package (it prints address anda bar code...) then its all ready to go. IF you lie about the weight, it may get sent back and no refund, or you are called into the post office to pay the full amount.

Oh, that's pretty interesting. What if you over estimate, do they give you a refund. I can't imagine too many people would be able to give an accurate weight on a bathrom scale. I wonder if this is a real problem for the USPS, or if most are close enough not to make much of a difference.

Nope, no refund for over estimate. I almost always overestimate, just incase. It goes by like certain jumps.. like 3.85 then 5.00 then 7.35 then 10 or something.. depends on where and how much weight. One thing to pay attention to, which is a pain in the ***.. that if it is longer than 35 inches, or more than a certain weight, anda few other things..... you have to do it at the post office to pay the special fees. All you put in online is the weight.

I've shipped about a whole range rover's worth of parts through USPS so I know. never tried tehir pickup service though. I thought I looked at it yesterday, and thought it said free pickup?

According to the website there is a max. weight of 70lbs per package, no mention on size. I guess I'll give it a shot, beats lugging a set of wheels to a crowded post office.
There is two options, one that has a fee, but you get to schedule the pickup time, the other is free, and you give it to the mail man when he makes his usual trip. I can see his expression now when he finds a wall of wheels to carry.
Thanks
