Preservation VS. Pimp

Preservation VS. Pimp
What is the feeling on Preservation VS. Pimp? I have an 89 NA 944 in REALLY good cosmetic condition (working on the mechanics now), and I was considering repainting it. It does not NEED it (except some clear coat and chin chips), but I was considering keeping it as close to factory as possible.
Or does it really matter on a 15 year old Porsche.....

For me it is primarily a matter of money. Doing a significant color change costs a significant amount of money and time; at least if we're talking doing it correctly. There is also the issue it losing value and though I don't forsee selling the car anytime soon, one never knows what might sneak up on them.
When I first bought my car I really wasn't too keen on the color, I bought the car because the price was right and it was in excellent shape. Since then the color has grown on me quite a bit, and I admit there is something about keeping it's original color that appeals to me, though I'm not sure what.

OK, where's the obligitory photo of the pimpin' yellow 944 wid da mac daddy on the hood from Cardomain? LOL. That's what I thought too Erik....
I say paint it. The paint you have now isn't concourse anyway. A quality paint job can't detract from the value anymore than so-so original paint. And if it makes you happy with the car, then all the better. It's not like we are talking about a 1973 2.7RS with matching numbers here.
Good luck!

I say keep it the original color. I've looked at more than one car that was repainted a different color. Some were good, most were bad.
A good quality paint job takes a lot more time and effort than a Maco "Tape 'N Spray." What I would recommend is asking your local dealer which shop they use.
I did that when my '84 needed a door replacement and partial paint after a woman ran the bumper of a HUGE Ford van down the passenger side of the car.
I took the car to the shop recommended by Hendrick Porsche, and the shop (Import Paint and Body here in Charlotte) did a first rate job. The color was matched perfectly, with no defects, and they even corrected a wiring mess that I was unaware of.

I repainted mine in the original color. Check was hard to write, but once it was done. Dayammmmm she's hot. Gets alot more attention at Pcar meets now too. If you can afford it, and you wish to keep it for years, do it.

the only time i would ever do a complete color change would be if i had the car down to the shell. because every time i worked on the interior of the car, under the hood, or in the hatch area, it would bug the hell out of me when i saw a different color. i would keep it the stock color unless you plan to take all the engine bay internals out and strip most of the rest of the car down. good luck with your decision.

i vote for preservation.. especially after seeing have original 912s have more than doubled in value in the last few years... yeah, thats not a concern for 944s now.. but will be down the road.

When I first started here, the word "Restoration" and 944 were never used in the same sentence. Just like the 914 a few years back. Have you priced a decent 914 lately??? The 944 will start to inch up in value in the near future. An 89 is already on the verge of becoming "rare". I would leave it the factory color. To change the color and to do it RIGHT would require a lot of time and a lot more money. As far as "pimpin" the car, the typical Porsche owner doesn't car anything at all about a chrome coffee can hanging out the back and a rear spoiler that is larger than the hatch. Your car will go for more money bone stock and cleaned to perfection.
