can i use a non-oem PS pump?
can i replace a power steering pump with a generic brand
pump that doesn't cost 250 bucks,including core?
if anyone has used a brand x part and the car had any problems
could you tell me why?
i see such a different price range on different porsche parts
just because it doesnt say porsche or some other german name
does that really mean it is a garbage part?or is it just a status thing.
if it actually works the same, why not?
any help or prior experience?

Why not just rebuild your pump? It only takes about 15min. and then its good as new.

Rolf,
Don't know whats up with your pump, but I current pump was rebuilt using a kit from Travis at Rennbay. Alternatively the last pump I picked up was used, $50 including shipping, from Todd on this board.

ps pump
this power steering is squealing and chattering at startup and hard to manuver
also at low rpm, also it does not appear to be leaking at the pump
because the resevior stays at the same level.
i saw the rebuild kits at rennbay and was under the assumption
that those are for leaking pumps.
the pump on my 951 gets very hot to the touch,so i thought with those
symptoms together the pump had to be going bye-bye.
i rather buy a kit then a new pump,if that sounds logical.
what do you guys think?

What happens is the pump starts leaking but not on the pressure side. It can leak on the intake side and suck air into it. When this happens the air is forced through the pump and gets squished. This causes the pump/rack to create a harmonic vibration witch puts a lot of wear on the internal pieces. The part that takes the brunt of this vibration is the internal pressure relief valve springs inside the rack.
To sum it up, air in the system causes heat and parts to eventually fail. Keep the air out of the system. Rebuild the pump and check the hose connections on the intake side.
