Just what I was looking for !! Thanks !! Some questions now, looking for good answers. My dad and I have been prepping the '84 for track use. Do we need to get a license with SCCA or PCA first to be able to get into the '44 Cup races ? Will that require a roll cage ? Can we jump in late in the season if we don't get everything done in time ? Thanks, and I can start a new thread if I need to.

944-cup runs under NASA sanctioning. So you need a NASA license. I believe you can get a provisional NASA with a PCA or SCCA. Car will need all normal safety gear. Roll cage, cut-off switches, race seats, etc as does the driver.

You can jump in any time as long as the driver is licensed, the car meet minumum NASA saftey specs, and is not overpreppared to the rules. Underpreppred is fine however. Realize that racing a 944 is very different from DE in a 944. The top 944 drivers get so much more from the car than most any DE driver. In 944-spec (different from 944 cup and running on the west coast) I have seen 5-8 second lap time differences between the top racers and new racers coming from DE. Even with fully prepped cars new drivers tend to be very slow.

The reason is not that they are bad drivers so much as to drive a 944 fast take the ability to drive on the very limit of adhesion everywhere all the time. In DE even if you appear or feel fast the limits are no where near those of a 944 racer.

Brett:
Visit their website. It has all the rules and licensing requirements. They run with NASA. I know alot of the guys who race in Mid Atlantic 944 Cup region. They have a good time and their is alot of comradery.

Sweet guys, thanks for the answer. I really want to get into this but have 0 experience right now. I may take this coming year and try and attend as many DE's as possible, then try to make it into the '06 season. Seems like it may be the smart way to go. Couple of other questions, what does it take to run in a DE, just a helmet and tech inspection ? Is a roll cage/race seats anything like that necessary for the DE's ? Are you allowed to spectate the '44 Cup races ? Maybe I'll go check some out at Roebling Road and Carolina Motorsports. Thanks fellas, you guys are real helpful.

I am waiting for the Midwest region to kick off!!! I see Heartland was included but not on the 05 schedule. Mid America is however and only an hour and a half away. I see this as my shot at racing finally! Cost is good too!

That is probably a good Idea. It can be very hard to jump directly into racing. One year of DE's will help greatly in your ability to learn to drive the car. Plus any new car will need some "sorting" time to test things out a bit.

All that is needed for DE is helmet and stock seat belts and stock seats. Of course the car needs to be good working order. NASA usally has DE time (HPDE) in their lingo and race time at all their events. So this means you can watch and even hang with the 944-cup guys in the paddock area. Most of the time you can spectate all races. Usally NASA does to not charge although some west coast tracks car an entry fee for all that enter. This is for drivers, crew and spetators alike.

Nice guys, thanks !! Awesome, my Dad and I are both really excited about getting into this. He gets into all kinds of stuff like motorcycle drag racing, motorcycle flat tracking, motocrossing, but nothing really with cars. So we're both probably going to be getting into it. We may need another car !! Maybe I'll rebuild the '88 and make it a track car also. Not ready to track the turbo yet, too fast for me to start out with, gonna hone my skills first.

Hopefully I'll see some of you guys out there this year !!
