Default Replacing Antenna

When i purchased my 84 944, the PO had a problem with the automatic antenna draining the battery. He removed the antenna, and i believe the motor is dead as well (the black canaster is still in the wheel well, i havent looked past that). I was just browsing through some old posts though, and came across this link at performance products for a replacement antenna for like $20. I was looking at getting the second one on the list, the black mast manual antenna.

So my question is .. will I need to replace/remove the old motor from the front driver wheel well, is it basically just screw in and it works, etc? Or is this basically $20 for a new, working antenna and I can finally listen to the radio? I'm not formilliar with the antennas at all being that mine has never been there.

Looks like the right one. I have a Hirschmann replacement for my dying one on the n/a car and from what I've been told it's the correct one. I've looked at the replacement and just have to get off my lazy butt and do it - remove driver's front wheel, remove charcoal cannister, access wiring & antenna behind there and R&R. I'm guessing it shouldn't take more than a couple of hours.

You could always plug the front hole and switch to a 968 roof mount antenna.

Just an option to keep in mind while digging around inside the front fender.

Yes, you will have to remove the old antenna because the part that extends through the fender is connected to the motor case. There would be no way to put the new antenna through the hole with the original antenna in there.

Its really not very hard at all to change out that antenna. I've replaced the antennas in both my '83 and 85 with Hirshmann power replacements, one chrome, one black. Even set both up with a switch on the center console. Manual one will be even easier yet. Likes been said, yes, you will have to remove the existing one completely.

Here are some past threads on the subject. If you fit a power antenna, make sure to wrap the electric motor housing with duct tape or something, because the wheel well moisture and debris will end up killing it.
