Default CALLING WHEEL EXPERTS

OK, So here's the story.

My 86 (Oval dash) 944 Lux came with teledial wheels (15x7j)

I then thought I was making a wise purchase when I brought some design 90's quite cheap. But they are sat inside the wheel arches way too far (look like they need a 1 inch spacer)

I then brought some reproduction 17 inch cup 2 wheels (7.5J and 9J) and they seem to fit just great.

Now... back to the design 90's and my question... a friend has a 2.7 1989 lux, and really likes the design 90's... he currently has teledials... so are his teledials the same offset as mine? or the same? are they the same as an S2? and of course, will the design 90's fit his 89 car????

And the question... I understand that in 1987 the offset of 944 wheels changed, and it seems that the design 90's will fit on my friends 89 2.7 lux and the design 90's are the same offset as his teledials... am I right in thinking this???

The other question.. if you own a late 86 944, or an early 87 944, how can you tell what offset the car has? is there a chassis number where the offsets changed? or is there a month in 87 where it changed?

Also... how did they change the offsets? was it the hubs? the brake rotor thickness? the wishbones and rear arms???

83 - 86 all have the same offset. 87on have the late offset. the D90's will fit your freinds 89 just fine.
I don't know what they changed.

yup, 87 was the offset change. it was necessary to accomodate abs which was now available. i'm pretty sure you're right about 1 inch being the number you need as far as spacers go. plenty of people seem to run spacers to get late offset wheels on early offset cars so there's nothing wrong with that but if you want to sell them to your friend, the wheels will bolt right up to his car as they are made for that offset

Look on the back of the wheel- the offsets are in the wheel casting-
i.e.- my 15x6 53mm 's are as follows:

6Jx15ET52.3
SO.. 6J = rim width 15ET = the rim diameter and 52.3 = 52.3mm offset.

944 went to late offset in 1987, 924's went to late offset with the 924S (85 in Europe)
Hope this helps.

great help as usual guys!

So out of interest... when exactly did the cars go over to the new offset? was it on a particular chassis number, or on a specific date? such as all cars made on the 1st of january 1987?? or was it all cars after a particular chassis number??

All 87 model year cars were late offset. If the car was available with ABS, it's late offset.

They changed the hubs on the rear, and I think the whole front spindles.

Seems to me that the production date for the change-over would be mid-86?....
Just a guess.
