I had a "similar" problem with my 87 automatic. The car would run, but it wouldn't drive. The shifter would move freely, but nothing would happen. It ended up being the shift cable. The ball joint at the trans was rusted and wouldn't pivot. This caused the threaded shaft to fatique and break. Hopefully it is this simple. Pretty easy to fix without replacing the cable too. If it's not the cable and you need parts, let me know. I am parting out the car because it was wrecked.
