I love the "cheaper" 275/40/17 corvette and camaro size tires for my 17x9 rear wheels. Its a popular size so they are very available at a better price. I still have a few A008 RSIIs I bought as take offs after 1 day of use on a club racer vette ($25 each with even wear and some tread left). With the right wheel offset, they work great under the rear of the 944. The wider tires got me better times on the big track at willow springs.

stock for stock, there's no need to upgrade to 17's other than for looks.

However for some 944 turbo's putting out over 300hp, 16x8 rears doesn't cut it. and unless you can find those rare 16x10 wheels, you pretty much have to jump up to a 17" wheel.

I always figured the cars were designed to run on 15/16 inch rims. If 25 inch rims are popular 4 years from now, that doesn't mean a 944 will run better with them! If you like the LOOKS of larger rims, and are willing to give up comfort (larger rims on shorter tires produce a harsher ride), go for it.

I'll keep my 16" rims! And buy new 16" rims for cheap! And not worry about some kid stealing my rims because they are "so tiny"!

^I am considering "upgrading" to 16" 968 rims like those! I think I'll put an ad out: "Will trade 17" 996 rims for D90's or 16" 968 rims and cash".

275/40R17 is really too tall a tire and looks like crap but there arent any really good options...oh yeah, 18" wheels

Another advantage, I would think, is that the 16 inch would offer better protection against pothole damage. This is a serious issue here in Boston.

I just purchased a set of 16 x 7 and 16 x 9 Club Sport wheels to replace my original phone dials. I am going to move the current rear 225's to the front and buy new 245's for the rear. This is the same configuration that the factory provided.

What are you gonna do with your 16" Phone Dials? I was thinking of getting a set to use as winter wheels...

Ha! Nah, don't like D90's Tom! I DO like phone dials though. They just look like they belong on our cars for some reason! Maybe the round cut outs flow with the rounded contours of the car's lines?

The main problem with 16's is the limited tire selection, not wheel availability. The largest street size is 245.

I think it's fair to say finding "oem porsche" 16x9 or larger wheels is about as hard as finding a 255/40 R16 tyre.

you'd have to get 911 9" fuchs or 951S / 928 club sports, or turbo cup mags. am I missing any other oem 16x9"?

I'd love to stay with 16x8's but especially with no LSD, it's far too easy to break 245's loose with 265bhp. even my worn down 255's break easy, but that's cuz they're worn down. and I like to floor it. And I want to install big reds. hence the 17" wheels.

oaky I admit I do like the visual of the 17" too. but I admit my 16" fuchs feel more comfortable on the street. much more comfortable.

Default 9" Options: Club Sports and Fuchs

The only two factory 9" options I'm aware of would be Club Sports (928S4 and 944 Turbo S OE) or 911 16 x 9 (930 Turbo OE?). Attached a picture from last year's Hershey Swap Meet that is either eye candy or tantalizingly tragic depending on your perspective I purchased the four Club Sports on the right with tires for about $600. As you can see there were other interesting choices, too. They wanted something like $900 for the four, but I waited and watched all day and there was actually not that much interest in the tires and I pounced whey they were packing up at the end of the day.

Don't know what they have right now, but these were at the Fairwinds Automotive booth. They're from Bear, Delaware and had lots of quality salvage stuff. Vince Suddard was the guy I dealt with. I have two phone #'s if there's any interest. They said, at the time (last May) they had numerous sets "back home."

This year's Hershey Central PA PCA Swap Meet is going to be at the Porsche Parade as is being planned as the "mother of all PCA swap meets" for 2005.
