Thanks Danno! My P-car education increases daily thanks to the Rennlisters! I now have a reason to buy more tools!
There aren't any 944/951 list members close to my area so I'm a bit on my own out here. This site is an invaluable resource! You guys should all come to SD for a belt tensioning party this spring! I'll supply the beer!

Dan got it almost right, the bolts are 6mm by 1.0 pitch, the bolt that is missing/broken is an allen head and will need a 5mm hex wrench. If that heat shield is rattling, check the front mount, chances are good that it is broken or cracked close to the point where it bolts to the motor.

I have a rattle too (comes in first gear - usually when feathering the clutch like stopped at a red light on a slight hill or something). Also, if I push in the clutch quickly shifting to second I hear a rattle when the engine is shifting... they think it's the heat shield and I have an appt next Monday. I hope they fix it... why does little sounds bug the crap out of me?? I hate myself for that!

Sounds good Karl! Maybe we should plan a gtg this spring. I'd love to kook up with other Rennlisters and meet some of your KCWS guys!
I have already decided that one of my winter projects is going to be to get at that noisy heat shield and do the oil cooler gaskets at the same time. I noticed that I've lost a little coolant after a week or so of driving. Haven't changed the oil yet and can't really tell if the oil is cloudy from the dipstick. The car is just 16 years old and it seems like a good preventative maintaince job. If anyone has an oil pressure relief alignment tool that they'd care to loan me that would be awesome!

I've tried bending the shield a number of different ways. Mainly that just seems to alter the rpm where I get the worst noise. I believe the problem has to be the missing bolt(s) in the picture on page one of this thread. I'll be putting her up on jack stands in about two weeks for a couple of winter projects. I'll tackle this problem at that time.
Karl, if you're going up to Pierre stop by Elk Point with that alignment tool

Reviving an OLD thread... This same rattling problem started right after I had the cross-over off. Very loud and irritating. Would only occur at revs just above idle and when engine was cold. Got the car up off the ground and could sort of strum the shield (like picking a banjo) to duplicate the problem. Once I could ID the contact point, it was easy to bend it slightly upward. I suspect it got tweaked when I was getting the cross-over back in place....Bruce
