Default ARRGGHHH! Transmissions suck. Need to rant.

Some of you may know, I'm swapping in a 951 Oil Cooled tranny right now.

I searched for about 2-3 months for a nice 951/S2 as a daily driver. My mom of course recommends a car "That will not be in the garage as much as it's on the road." I find a car will full records, with a $2200 receipt for pump/seals/belts 15k miles before purchase. Car has 170k miles, but that doesn't discourage me, they should go a lot longer.

2 days after I get the car, it develops a coolant leak. With the help of cas951, oi-punx, and njim, I bypass the coolant lines leading to the throttle body. Couple days later, I come out of a supermarket to find a giant puddle of coolant under the car. Yay! The water pump is shot! So much for the $2200 receipt, looks like that didn't mean squat. I drive the car like this until 2 weeks ago, and pull everything apart. Time is lost because i have to order tools, parts, etc.

3 weeks into ownership - Car makes horrible noises under deceleration from the back. No such noises before purchase. Take it to a Porsche specialist - one of the bearings in the tranny is gone. Drive to sacramento to pick up an 86 951 trans w/ 92k miles. Owner points out a loose bolt on top - it has a philips head. I think "Well, if I take it out, I can see what it threads into, and tighten it back up." Nope, take out the bolt, reverse gear plate that engages the idler gear falls into the bottom of the tranny. Take apart the tranny, line it up, torque the bolt down. Put the tranny back together w/ some special sealant. Old tranny comes out, new one goes in. Connect linkage, ****, won't go into gear. It went into gear after I assembled it, but when i dissasembled a second time to apply sealant to the two halves, It must have slipped into gear while I was assembling it the 2nd time. Of cource, I didn't check this while the tranny was on the ground, sans 2.1 quarts of Redline.

So now I have to pull my tranny back out, take it apart and assemble it properly. Nothing has gone right. I should start riding my bike.

If anybody wants to come help me out this Saturday morning, it would be greatly appreciated. My parents are out of town, and I've been using their cars the past 2 weeks as mine sits lonely in the garage. They come back Saturday evening, so I NEED to get the car running.
