Help Financing a 951
#31
charlotte944 is right on the money here.
why does a 17 year old need three porsches? he doesn't, especially with maintenance costs. you're looking at a whole bunch of financial problems down the road when you figure car payments PLUS maintenance PLUS full coverage insurance.
sell the two n/a 944's then buy a 951.

88 Merkur XR4TI - Sold but not forgotten.
I had an 86 XR4Ti a long while back brought up to Cossie spec with parts purchased from Rapido and FME. How did you like yours? Was it bone stock? Man, I really liked that car, too bad it was taken away from me due to someone going left of center a long time ago..............
(well, other than the lack of heat that it had in the winter)

Not like finanacing a new Bimmer through the local credit union for $60Gs.
Others have fared ok, but I believe you are taking upon yourself unnecessary debt at an unnecessary time for an unnecessary luxury. OK, the definition of a luxury item lacks necessity as-is, but you get my point. Why be held hostage to someone else on a car thats older than you are. Once a bank has you by the *****, the only time it lets go is to get a better grip. I just dont think 944s are worth borrowing money for. A 3yr old Boxster, perhaps, but not a 944. Its my own biased opinion that if you cant buy a 944 outright, you probably will have a hard time taking care of it once you have it anyway. Sort of a litmus test. 944s have no warranties. Crap breaks. Fires happen. You could possibly end up upside down in a claim as well but thats another topic altogether.

I was hanging outside my mechanics one time with a 928 and older 911 owner, and we were talking about these older cars and about someone who wanted one, and one of the guys said "If you have to take out a loan to own a[n older] Porsche, you can't afford the car."
Having heard this before jumping into the loan, I might have thought twice. But I don't have much left on the loan, and I'm graduating soon, so I figure I'll just be working the rest of my life. I wanted the car badly, and I don't regret what I did.

hey tifo,
let me tell you, i absolutely loved the merkur. i was well aware of the cossie massaged sierra, and wanted one badly. bt seeing as how we don't get much of the good stuff over here, the merk was the way to go. the car was pretty stock save for a few small hop-up parts, but the body and interior were great. i was going to do the 5.0 liter swap and restore the car along with adding the cossie body parts.
yeah, i miss it. thanks for bringing it up...
you got any pics of yours?

rock,
i think you're making a wise decision to wait, especially with TWO OTHER porsches.
i've said it before on this board.....i'm now paying off $30,000 of debt (credit card and otherwise) that i have to pay because i was too young and foolish to wait another year or two until I could actually pay for the car(s). I totally agree with UDPride and Charlotte944 - you think getting the loan for the car is the only money you'll need? hell, no. i maxxed out TWO credit cards to fix my 951 that i owned for only two years. wish i could take that back!!
i now have the income to buy a C2 911 if i wanted, but instead i'm paying off loans from my former impulsive days. dammit.

I imported and installed a slew of cossie parts, including the 16V head, intercooler, larger turbo, etc from FME. Then installed a borla dual exhaust, a T-5 trans and custom driveshaft joint (to replace the crappy rubber donut). Bodywise I sourced the Cosworth header panel, hoodvents, mirrors, and rear bi-plane wing from Rapido. It was black with black 16" BBS rims, looked awesome. Even with the wing on the back, it was a sleeper as most people in the states here thought it was a riced out Ford Escort. The cosworth badge on the back still did nothing to give away what it really was. The car got totalled when someone went left of center and hit me head on, there was almost nothing left on the car that was salvagable. I still have the badge from the back though....
I see one running around here every once in awhile that a guy is working on, he has the cossie front header panel and looks like he has lowered it a bit. I always give him the thumbs up, but he looks at me like I'm a madman...LOL.
It looked a lot like this one, only black:
Again, sorry for the OT digression here.......
