Default early vs late rear suspension

I have an early '85 that has late ('87+) rear control arms. I was in the process of putting in new shocks yesterday, when I noticed that the bottom bolt was larger than the shock was prepared to accept . The question is - is this the only difference? Can I just get late model shocks and be done?

As always, TIA for the collective wisdom.

You need late model shocks.
