Unhappy non starter ....and new car choice

Hi all,

have a problem with my 86 944S euro 2.5 16valve....damn thing won't start! I've got power (the car turns over on the starter). I've got fuel...I have no spark..well, sometimes there is a weak spark. Strangely, when I attach a spare plug to a plug lead and crank the engine, there is no spark as I turn the engine over...however, as I turn the ignition off, there sometimes is a spark that runs from the end of the plug back up to the lead!!!

I've checked the obvious bits and swapped the DME, cleaned the inside of the rotor cap and checked the rotor...all sem fine.

The car as been laid up for 5 months (just been shunting it up and down the yard every couple of days or so. It always started in a fashion but on the last time of moving, the engine cut out whilst idling and since won't start.

So, help needed or I'll take an angle grinder to the beast and reduce it to a pile of spares!!!!

On a happier note, possibly going to buy a 1989 944 S2 cabriolet (108k miles, baltic blue, full linen leather, FSH, new engine 200 miles old, cup 2's, immaculate, one owner car). Anything special or specific I should look out for?

Thanks for your help.
