It sounds like someone is taking a small hammer and tapping the head with it. A header leak will just make a loud exhaust note, it won't sound like 2 pieces of metal hitting together.

Damn.... Tapping noises...Yep....that's what it sounds like...

It figures.... so does that mean that my engine is going south?. Am I going to have to have a complete rebuild?. Does anyone know how much this is going to cost ?

Man, I hope I win the Lotto this week so I can afford to do all of this....

Woah, whoa, slow down there a bit. There is a good chance it is something simple like I mentioned on page one of this thread. FYI, if the gasket is shot you will here a bit of tapping mixed in with the nascar noise, you just normally don't hear it when the exhause is a closed system.

Have you actually got in there and looked at where the noise is coming from? Take it slow, look at the obvious thing (the exhaust leak), and then if that isn't it get some better info for us and come back here and post it. Remember, it's easier for others to help you if you help yourself a little first.

Don't tell him his engine is shot. Listen to Tifo and I. When my studs broke off one of my manifold ports, it was a loud KNOCKING. I actually have a sound clip I believe, let me dredge it up. With that gasket gone or loose, it WILL make a knocking, very loud too, increasing with throttle.

Okay.. From the best I could tell when I was having this problem, it sounded like it was coming from the Cam tower. I thought I had bad lifters or rod knock. Hence the name of the sound clip. Listen to this, I'll bet it's this.
It's not perfectly clear, but you can hear it pretty good (or bad on how you want to think of it) when I give it gas.

I bet when you fixed the other part of your exhaust, you banged the manifold pipe around and either snapped a stud, crccked teh manifold, or deseated a gasket.

Make sure your careful taking the studs out. They shouldn't be too difficult considering the head is aluminum, but they aren't terribly strong studs either.

I never said it was a rod knocking, I'm just pointing out that it may not be the headers depending on the sound he's getting. Replacing the gasket is a good first step (and maybe only step) to finding this problem's solution.

You guys were right on the money!!!!!. today I went outside to replace my Exhaust Manifold gaskets and I noticed that the last pipe from the manifold (closest to the firewall) had no bolts. I placed a new bolt in the front one (the last one has a broken stud in it) and tightened it to specs. I turned the car on an WOW...she is quiet!!!!. I don't think I ever had her this quiet before. anyway i drove her around town and she drives like a charm. Now do you guys know how to remove that broken stud so I can replace it with a new one?

thanks again guys............

P.S. does anybody know where I can get a 36mm wrench?. I went to ACE, Home Depot,
Lowes, Pep Boys, Advance Auto Parts, and Sears, but no one has it !!!

Ok... I told you so.

I know how to get the stud out , if it's broken pretty flush with the block. BTW, the bolts aren't goign to be stuck most likely, its just a matter of turning them.

I'll find the thread.

read through this, there is pictures included. Let me know if this helps. you will have ot take the manifold offf to do this unfortunately. I know how much of a pain it is to keep taking everything off and on again.
