Default Oil Leak at front of engine?

Just below the crank pulley it seems I have an oil leak. I'm new to 944's, but on my other cars this has been the front main seal and required new oil pan seal and front main. Is it the same with a 944?

Oil seal at the oil pump housing. Most likely coming from the top part of crank. There is a small area on the top housing that is a big leaker.

But the leak will appear as it is coming from the bottom of the shaft but really coming from the top.

Could be the pan gasket as when replaced many get squished or not set properly and the gasket is bulging out. I would clean the crank pulley area real good along the bottom radius of the crank pulley and run the car then see if the leak appears from top or bottom.
If you see oil above the pan gasket cascading it is the seal, below the pan mount surface, gasket it is.

This is usually a small leak that occurs up top. And notorious leak at that.

Ask Bill Burris or George B. at PCA tech 924/944/968. One of them can explain the leak that is from the top oil housing.

Good luck!

Dal

I would start with a front seal job (kit costs about 80 bucks for all the seals), and then see if it leaks after that. If it does, then look at the oil pan gasket, which you really dont want to have to do if you can help it.

He is going to have to do the front end anyway to get to it. And as Karl said the pan is not a fun job. If the pan gasket, may as well re do the rod bearings while in there!

Can I get a second to this!!
