Ok, so I have tested everything and it looks like the problem is with the speed sensor (like you guys thought). I called the local Posrche dealership and they want $207 for it!!!! Is that normal? I called around to other parts houses and nobody else could get them.

Thanks,
Michael

It was posted before that they're the same part as a BMW part. Here's the part numbers that someone posted on here before with:

12 14 1708 618
12 14 1710 668

Maybe those will give you better luck, not sure. Let me know what prices you come up with becuase I need to replace my speed and reference sensor.

Thanks Brett 944! Through BMW, those sensors are 'only' $97 each. Atleast they have them in stock though.

Since the sensors are more than I thought, I'd rather replace only the one that needs it. Here are my resistance measurements:

The reference sensor give nothing at all...no resistance between 25-26 or 25-78

The speed sensor gives an acceptable reading between 8-27, but nothing between 8-23

I am hoping that the speed sensor it reading that way because the reference sensor is defective.
Is this what you guys would conclude from these measurements?

I'm feeling pretty lost with all of this. Not that I can't fix it, but this is my first Porsche and I've only had this car 2 weeks (it's been broke down for 1 week).

Thanks,
Michael

Man...I have seen more posts on this than ever (which isn't really that long). But really....my sensor went bad about a month ago. I was going through the same trouble as you. I ended up spending $270 after labor to have it repaired. Oh well....easier than trying to deal with it myself at the time (only one car and days are getting shorter).

I paid $150 for the sensor BTW. My mechanic told me that there is a service bulletin about these sensors....that the magnetic field from the starters burn them out over time. I have heard there is a bracket available....maybe from the dealer.....

Should the sensors test the same when removed from the car?

Thanks,
Michael

Default Problem fixed!

Like you guys said, it was one of those sensors at the top of the bellhousing. $97 from BMW and 15 minutes later, that car was running again.

Since both sensors are the same, I don't know which one I actually changed out, but one of them was definately bad!

Thanks for the help, information, and links to other sites(very informative),
Michael Dunn

If you shop around on the net at some discount parts houses, you can find them shipped for about 80 bucks. Just a standard bosch part.

Thanks Rock!

This is exactly why I wasn't getting a spark.

I just changed the timing belt and was pushing these wires around to get a look at the flywheel OTC and disconnected the bottom plugs by accident.
