Default rear cam cover gasket?

im not sure what its called, but i bought the cam cover gasket, but cant find the rear cover gasket. would i be safe just buying thermostat cut to size gasket and making my own? or has anyone had bad experiences with it? also, si that gasket and cover actually holding something else on, or can i just take all of it off with the valve cover? thanks in advance.

The rear cam cover gasket is also called the "hippo gasket" for its obvious looking shape, so a thermostat gasket probably won't work. I have one laying out in the garage, but I am a lazy bastard to go out and take a picture of it. If you need me too i will. I think the gasket is all of 10 bucks.

Edit: Oh and it is just a cork gasket, so i guess if you could find some cork material, you could trace on yourself. Maybe i was thinking of the wrong thermostat gasket.

you can get it from pelican, but you have to look under the 928 parts. it takes some looking, but it is there. Only costs about $.75
I just did mine about a month ago.

If it's the one I'm thinking of, it's a good idea to reach back there and give the 3 little bolts a turn once in a while. For some reason, that cover has a tendency to work itself loose over time. I just got in the habit of snugging it up a couple times a year.

^^ yes, mine was missing one bolt and the other two were halfway out. Only thing really holding it on was the petrified gasket.

Agreed with what was said above, the cover on mine was missing two bolts and the last one was halfway out. It solved my oil leak problem real quick... . There is a good chance your local p-car dealer has the part in stock...the dealer by me did amazingly. Its worth a try.

Mine worked loose, too, and I had a nice little oil fire on the exhaust manifold! Nothing serious, though. No damage.

Kenny, the gasket is about the thickness of a CD. Below is a picture of the actual gasket with my zippo for size comparison. I bought the gasket in Febuary thinking that it was bad and leaking but found it was just two missing bolts and a loose bolt. I ended up never using the gasket. The part number for it is #928-105-189-02

Kenny - just trace it and cut it, stick it back on. I did it once with cork on a friend's car, and once with karropak on my car (83). No problems on mine after 70k miles when I sold the car.

I second, third, eighth, whatever everyone above said about them coming loose. I used a little RTV around the bolt heads to stop it.

Hey - there's a GTG in Hilliard tonight - see thread about it! At Dave & Busters.

Tony K, i commend you for thinking of that. I didnt even think of that...

No pun intended on usage of the zippo, its the only thing on my desk that has a uniform size, honest!

After searching on here a little i think i have either a minor valve cover gasket leak or the cork gasket leak. Does anyone have a brief description on the procedure for changing these seals? And does anyone have the parts numbers?

Thanks a lot!
Erich
