I bought a cheap triple square, and it's held up great so far.
Luis, do you happen to remember who you bought yours from?

Check out this site for an inexpensive rear wheel bearing tool and some good tips on how to replace them:

I haven't tred this, but saw the link in another thread.

I bought a cheap Lisle set at Pep Boys -comes with 6, 8, 10 and 12mm bits for $15. Not the greatest quality, though.

For the CV joint bolts specifically, Dal Heger recommended another brand called "SK" in 8mm. It's a socket & bit piece for around the same price as the whole Lisle set, but has held up quite well after some abuse.

They have a very comprehensive website and the SK catalog number is 45438.

Yep, mine's a lisle set.
I wish I had been slightly more specific. I meant do you remember who you got your CV joints from?

If anybody knows what VW has interchangable axles, that would be great too =)

Got the CVs here:

http://www.eurowebparts.com/

They advertise in Pano. A fellow named Chris was super to deal with. I navigated their catalog and got the VW CVs instead of the Porsche ones. Dramatic difference in price. They're 1mm thinner, but I have had them on my 83 for several months and no issues. Just be sure to replace and properly torque down the triple square bolts.

Wow, everything on that site needs to be taken with caution, lol.
They say that their headers add 16HP.... And for some reason, the headers come with what looks like a cone air filter?...
They also say the cone filter kit adds 6HP, there have been a number of tests of similar items on this board, with quite the opposite results, lol.

Luis, I'm just having a little bit of trouble finding the CV joints for the price you mentioned, but I'm still looking =)

What do you mean 1mm thinner, do you mean that big flange at each end? That may cause some longevity issues, I'm not sure.

I'm trying to find out what model VW's cv shafts will fit our cars still.
CT944, do you happen to have a model number or something for the cv shafts you bought?

Rear wheel bearings on the early cars are MUCH easier than the post 85.5 cars. Loosening the axle nut may be the main problem. Make sure the spacers are put back in correctly along with fresh grease and new seals.

I've changed them on both an early, and a late 944. 10x easier on the early. I hate taking a torch to an aluminum part, just to make it expand enough to get the bearing perfectly wedged (err crooked). I had a really tough time on my 86, but on my friend's 83, it was a relatively smooth job. We pulled the bearings by driving the old ones out with a pin punch, although I'm sure a nice bearing puller would work much better.

Autoparts Unlimited (203-378-2653) is where I purchased them. I will look at the receipt when I get home to see if there is a part # and brand name.

Like I said, $139.00 for 2 complete axle assemblies with the cv joints. I've seen prices for around $300 for one assembly in Porsche part suppliers catalog (which is rediculous).

That would be great. I have a discount at NAPA, so perhaps I can head over there to pick up a set. My passenger side outer joint is ready to kick the bucket. I guess I shouldn't have gone to that solo 2 event with a bad CV joint, lol.

The local Partsource quoted me $155CDN for a VW T4 van axle, and assured me that I could then strip the CV's off it, and return it with mine for the core (an additional $80). Not worth it IMO.

I've seen Porsche CV joints around the $80US mark each, so $139 for 2 axles is bloody great!
Even if I had to ship them from the place you got yours from, I'd still be saving big.

OK,

From the receipt:

Manufacturer: AI
Part # 60-9055 (CV Axles)
Sell: $65.95 each

No core charge, as I returned the old ones when I picked up the new.
Hope this helps!!

Thanks for the info!
I was hoping they might have a web site, but there are so many companies with that name I can't find them =)
Perhaps I'll give them a call, and ask what model VW that axle fits. I have a discount at NAPA, so I think I might be able to get them for around the same price locally, and save the shipping.

LMAO, I looked through all of these catalogs, and said to myself 'that's such a rare car, no way it's off that!'
And here you are saying it is... well, it's worth a second look =)
Thanks for the tip!
