Middle of clutch job question-83 944?
Does anyone have any advice on getting that allen bolt off on the upper drivers side between the engine and bellhousing. Everything else up to this point has been painless...if I get it out I will definitely replace it with a standard hex head. I have a short allen socket but have no throw to get it out. I've tried from the top and bottom both to no avail. Typical repair, the muscle work is done in 4 hours, the finesse stuff takes the rest of the day. This is my first clutch on a P-car and the small stuff is driving me crazy! Rant On

Long extension (I want to say I used one with a universal but it has been a while.)

I cut the end off an allen key and have it glued to a straight ring spanner (the ring spanner is a real cheap old rachet type to make it easier, this allows you a bit more clearence and leverage). At worse case you can undo the 4 bolts on the bellhouse/torquetube and this will allow the bellgousing to move forward slightly again giving you more room.

The long extension is a no go. There is less than 3/4" just to get the ratchet onto the short allen socket before I hit the firewall or coolant piping above. I might try that cut allen key in the racheting closed end trick. The trans is out and the torque tube is disconnected and slid back at the front so whatever clearance I have I'll have to live with...why did Porsche use an allen here?...the logic escapes me. I think the 83 MY had a few bugaboos that dealer mechanics bitched about and got changed in later years. Pulling the motor for a clutch job, at least on this car, is sounding better in hindsight. Working alone is a bitch!

I broke my swivel head on those bolts but again it was a real cheapie 1/4 drive (the 3/8 was to big) at the time I was tempted to drill through the firewall to get to it, thats when I got the allen key idea. Also remember if you get it undone make sure you can get the rachet, allen key off so the bolt will undo all the way, if you don't it gets jambed on the firewall and you can't get to the lever to flip the rachet so you end up breaking it. OK so now you know how I broke my swivel head rachet.
